Cheng Yan Kee, Doctor of Business Administration honoris causa


Based in Hong Kong, he is a practising civil and structural engineer registered in Hong Kong, the People’s Republic of China and the United Kingdom. He enjoys the signal honour of being President of the Institution of Structural Engineers, the world’s leading professional body for qualifications and standards in structural engineering, for 2013. He has lectured extensively on the earthquake resistant design of buildings and hazard mitigation.

Mr. Cheng is active in public service. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2000 and was awarded a Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2015 for his contribution to Hong Kong.

He has been Chairman of Council and Court of the Hong Kong Baptist University since 2013, having started as a Council member in 1999. He has served the university extensively, witnessed the growth of the institution, and assumed leadership position in university governance. He is a member of the governing board of the United International College in Zhuhai. Mr. Cheng is very familiar with higher education development worldwide.

He is a former Chairman of the Corruption Advisory Committee under the Independent Commission Against Corruption, Commission on Youth, Hong Kong Housing Authority, Town Planning Board and Hospital Authority. He retains chairmanship of the Hospital Authority Capital Works Sub-committee providing governance oversight on the massive hospital expansion and re-development programme. He is an active member in the e-Health Consortium tasked with the promotion and popularization of the electronic health record sharing system.
