Macau Centre for Mathematical Sciences successfully held an academic lecture on the application of mathematics and computer science in Brain image computing and financial analysis

On February 2, 2024, Dr. Albert Cheung from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Dr. Shuqiang Wang from the Chinese Academy of Sciences visited M.U.S.T. where they were warmly received by Professor Tao Qian, Director of Macau Centre for Mathematical Sciences, and Associate Professor Xuanxuan Xiao. Dr. Cheung and Dr. Wang were invited to deliver a presentation to students at M.U.S.T. on the application of mathematics and computer science in Brain image computing and financial analysis.

Dr. Albert Cheung gave a speech on ‘Time Series Attention Transformer (TSAT)’. In multivariate time series forecasting, each variable depends on its historical values and there are inter-dependencies among variables as well. TSAT is proposed for multivariate time series representation learning. The intra-series correlations are represented by nodes in a dynamic graph; a self-attention mechanism is modified to capture the inter-series correlations by using the super-empirical mode decomposition (SMD) module. Extensive experiments show that TSAT clearly outerperforms six state-of-the-art baseline methods in various forecasting horizons.

Dr. Shuqiang Wang was giving a speech

Prof. Shuqiang Wang gave a speech on‘Generative AI Empowers Brain Imaging-Brain Network Computing’. He presented the work on cross-modal reconstruction, super-resolution, and 3D reconstruction of brain images using generative AI algorithms such as GANs and VAEs. Also he explored the main issues and challenges in brain image-brain network reconstruction and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of existing brain network construction tools.

Prof. Tao Qian also introduced his work on AFD and its applications on signal processing. He introduced the innovative research conducted at the Macau Centre for Mathematical Sciences and provided a brief overview of the disciplinary and research development in that field. Both parties expressed the desire to further engage in diversified exchanges and collaborations in areas such as talent cultivation and research development in the future.
