The Opening Ceremony of “The Faculty of Innovation Engineering of M.U.S.T. - Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Lecture Series” Successfully Held

On the occasion of the 24th Anniversary of the Macau University of Science and Technology, Faculty of Innovation Engineering held a series of Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Lectures, and invited experts from different fields to give a series of special lectures and share their research results and professional knowledge in the field of cutting-edge science and technology with teachers and students of our university. There are altogether 9 lectures in the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Lecture Series, with the first two lectures held at the 9:30am on March 14, 2024 at MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center. President Joseph Hun-wei Lee of M.U.S.T. was invited to give a welcome speech.

This lecture was hosted by the Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Innovation Engineering, Professor Tang Jianxin, and attended by President of M.U.S.T. Joseph Hun-wei Lee, Distinguished Professor of the Department of Engineering Science, Professor Arlindo Oliveira, Distinguished Professor of the School of Computer Science and Engineering, Academician Zou Zhigang, Dean of the School of Computer Science and Engineering, Chair Professor Zhang Du, Head of the Department of Engineering Science, Chair Professor Wu Naiqi, Head of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Professor Ma Yibing, attracted 17 teachers and postdoctoral researchers from the Faculty of Innovation Engineering, the School of Business, and the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management, and 74 bachelor students from the Faculty of Innovation Engineering participated.

President Joseph Hun-wei Lee delivered a speech

In this lecture, President Joseph Hun-wei Lee extended a warm welcome to all the guests and expressed his deepest gratitude to the speakers. President Lee said that the establishment of Innovation Engineering (FIE) marks an important milestone in the history of our University and reflects our commitment to harnessing the synergy of multidisciplinary research to promote the advancement of engineering disciplines. President Lee emphasized that this series is more than just an academic exercise, it's a testament to our belief in the power of cross-disciplinary dialogue to unearth solutions for the grand challenges of our time. Through this platform, we aim to foster an environment where ideas converge, disciplines intersect, and innovation flourishes.

Professor Arlindo Oliveira was giving a speech

Prof. Arlindo Oliveira, Distinguished Professor of the Department of Engineering Science of the Faculty of Innovation Engineering, was invited to deliver a keynote speech on the theme of "Megatrends in Digital Technologies", discussing the principles and the potential societal impact of four key digital technologies: quantum computing, blockchain, internet of things and artificial intelligence. Dr. Arlindo Oliveira proposed strategies for the positioning of higher education and research institutions, relatively to each one of these technologies, and discussed how people, institutions, and society in general can maximize the potential benefits while minimizing the risks involved.

Professor Dr. Zou Zhigang was giving a speech

Prof. Zou Zhigang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Distinguished Professor of the School of Computer Science and Engineering, delivered a keynote speech titled "Extraterrestrial Survival and Artificial Photosynthetic Materials for Deep Space Exploration", discussing the basic material and energy needs faced by manned deep space exploration and human long-term extraterrestrial survival. It focuses on lunar minerals and energy resources, developed 2-3 types of extraterrestrial artificial photosynthetic materials and their controllable preparation technologies based on the lunar soil of Chang'e-5, constructs an efficient extraterrestrial artificial photosynthetic material system, elucidates the mechanism of action of extraterrestrial artificial photosynthetic materials in special environments, and develops extraterrestrial artificial photosynthetic systems, to achieve experimental verification of space environment and provide a revolutionary technological route for extraterrestrial survival.

This series of lectures will provide a valuable exchange and learning opportunity for college teachers and students, enriching their knowledge and skills in interdisciplinary science and engineering, making it easier for them to achieve excellent results in future work and study. The Faculty of Innovation Engineering will continue to hold more academic lectures to promote the improvement of interdisciplinary fields and the sharing of academic results for college teachers and students, and jointly promote the continuous development of scientific and technological innovation work.
