University Anniversary Event: The 12th Wangyang Cup Law Debate Competition Grand Final and the 12th Guanying Cup Law Essay Competition Award Presentation Ceremony Successfully Concluded

To celebrate the 21st Anniversary of the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), the Award Presentation Ceremony of the 12th Wangyang Cup Law Debate Competition and the 12th Guanying Cup Law Essay Competition, hosted by the Faculty of Law, MUST, co-organised by the Students’ Association of the Faculty of Law, MUST, and supported by the MUST Foundation, was held on 8 April 2021 from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm in Lecture Theatre N212, Library Building N of the University. Professor Joseph Hun-wei LEE, President of the MUST, attended the competition and gave a speech to the students and teachers of the Faculty. He warmly praised the wonderful performance of the contestants, shared his experience with the students and teachers present, and encouraged them to continue to improve.

Event venue

The Faculty of Law Wangyang Cup Law Debate Competition is a regular event that aims to encourage students to develop their oral legal debating skills and teamwork. The 12th Wangyang Cup Law Debate Competition was originally scheduled to be held in 2020, but was postponed to this year due to the impact of the COIVD-19. The competition received an overwhelming number of applications, a total of 17 teams, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, participated in the competition. After three rounds of competition, including qualifying rounds, preliminary rounds and a semi-final round, four teams were selected to compete in the final round. The judges for the final were Lawyer Li Woon Kong, Lawyer Xu Bing, Professor Liu Chengkun, Professor Li Xiaoping, and Associate Professor Wang Chuanhui. Before the competition, Dean Fang Quan of the Faculty of Law presented souvenirs to the external judges.

The Guanying Cup Law Essay Competition is also a traditional professional competition in the Faculty of Law, encouraging students to develop their legal research essay writing skills and improve their legal research standards. The 12th Guanying Cup Law Essay Competition received a total of 24 essays from undergraduate and postgraduate students since it was first open for application. The Faculty of Law formed a judging panel and, after two rounds of judging, the essays were selected and tested by the University's Academic Misconduct Detection System. The Best Paper Award was given to Chen Shutong in Year 4 for her essay titled "The Evolution and Challenges of the Criteria for the Recognition of 'Effective Control or Command' of Individual Criminal Responsibility for the Crime of Aggression". Wang Xinmiao's essay "The Legal Regulation of Unilateral Change Rights in Formal Contracts: A Perspective on the Case of Aiqiyi's Breach of Contract in Advance" and Shao Rang's "On Hate Speech in Social Networks and the Recognition of the ‘Publicity' Requirement of Direct and Public Incitement to Racial Extermination" won the Outstanding Paper Award in the Undergraduate Category. The Best Paper Award in the Postgraduate Category was given to Yuan Pengou for her essay "Embryo Disposition: Legislation through a U.S. - China Comparative Study", and the Outstanding Paper Award in the Postgraduate Category was given to Huang Zijing for the essay "Study on the Administrative Response to a Major Epidemic in Macao SAR" and Wong Chi Ho, a first year Doctor of Law student, for the essay "The Relativity between Special Stamp Duty and the Principle of Taxability in Macau".
