Faculty of Law Successfully Held Two Seminars for Freshmen in October

Faculty of Law successfully held two seminars for freshmen in October, with the themes of “Reviewing and Searching of Legal Literature “and “Autonomous Learning and Paper Writing”. More than one hundred new students attended the seminars.

The seminar “ Reviewing and Searching of Legal Literature” was held online at 16:30 on 15th October 2021, hosted by the Director of Undergraduate Degree Programme Xie Geng Liang. Assistant Professor Chen Bo gave a lecture. Starting from a series of questions on why to read, what to read, how to read, how and where to search for literature, Assistant Professor Chen Bo led students to ways of reviewing and searching for legal literature. He emphasized that the significance of literature review is not only to prepare for tests but also to improve professional quality, helping students to be a man with knowledge. After that, Assistant Professor Chen Bo explained methods of reading and searching for articles of law, textbooks, case and judgement documents and other types of academic articles and papers. He suggested students make full use of different tools, such as PKULAW, LegisMac, CNKI.Net, Laws and Regulations and case books Meanwhile, he also advised that students master some certain methods before reading, read the outline, and then details and attach importance to the differences between subjects and specific requirements of teachers. In the session of exchange, the two teachers also discussed how to build up a knowledge system in a short time and what was the effective argument, and encouraged students to enjoy the process and achievement of learning.

The Seminar “Autonomous Learning and Paper Writing “ was held online at 16:30 on 22nd October 2021, hosted by Director of Undergraduate Degree Programme Xie Geng Liang, Assistant Professor Xiao Hui Na gave a lecture. Assistant Professor Xiao emphasized that paper writing depended on thinking instead of language, thinking of academic writing included consciousness of readers, problems, innovation, and standards. She encouraged students to broaden their thought, change their methods, transform thinking of law into thinking of society, not limited to the theories of interpretation and legislation. She said research methods of social science and mixed research methods could also be adopted and then introduced field study and quantitative research methods by combining specific literature. During the seminars, the two teachers emphasized the importance of writing norms and academic integrity and showed the standards of qualified paper writing. It was hoped that students would be strict with themselves and abandon window dressing. Students said that these seminars helped greatly in paper writing. In the last session of interaction, the two teachers answered online questions from students and the seminars gained great success.
