The 20th Shizi Gate Law Forum ( the first of the academic year 2021-2022) was successfully held at the N101 lecture hall in MUST at 10:00 AM, 30th November 2021. The forum was organized by the Faculty of Law, MUST, and sponsored by MUST Foundation. It is honorable to invite Professor Zhu Ci Yun from the School of Law, Tsinghua University as the keynote speaker. The topic of this forum is “ Embracing ESG: the Dynamic Response of Modern Company Law”. Professor Zhu Ci Yun is the professor and doctoral supervisor of School of Law, Tsinghua University, Vice-president of China Commercial Law Society, Distinguished Professor of Law School of Shenzhen University.
The Dean of Faculty of Law, MUST, Professor Fang Quan, President of Alumni Association of Faculty of Law, Lau Chak Kwong and Barrister Oriana Inácio Pun from Pun Choi & Chan Law Firm, Barrister Lou Sio Fong from Lou Sio Fong Lawyers& Associates, Legal expert Sit Mei Wa on behalf of Barrister Lei Wun Kong from Lektou Law Firm and Program Director Xie Geng Liang, Program Director Bi Jing Wei, Assistant Professor Wang Jia, Assistant Professor Zhong Wen Cai, and more than 100 students presented the forum offline, meanwhile, there were about 150 teaching staffs and students join in the forum online.

Starting from the emergence of the ESG concept and growth of the ESG movement, Professor Zhu Ci Yun in-depth explored the interior conjunction between ESG movement and company system by combining with its trend of global development and practice in China. Professor Zhu pointed out that ESG had injected new vitality to purpose provisions of the company from the perspective of ESG idea. Meanwhile, the standards of ESG also had refined the new direction of the company’s social responsibility. Moreover, the goal of ESG had endowed new connotation of company directors’ faith obligation and its regulations had made new request of internal management of company. At last, Professor Zhu put forward several routes for modern company law to respond to the ESG movement.
In the interaction session, students from the Faculty of Law raised questions actively. The forum lasted two hours with a strong academic atmosphere. Professor Zhu’s viewpoints were profound theoretically and tightly combined with the current situation of law-based management of companies in China, broadening theoretical vision and understanding of the practice of modern company law.
