Students from the Faculty of Law Win Second Prize at the 2023 "International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition"

On March 18, 2023, a team from the Faculty of Law at M.U.S.T. participated in the Chinese selection round of the "International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition" (ICCMCC) held online in the 750 conference room of Building R on campus. The team achieved the second prize at the national level.

The team consisted of six members: Zhang Meiqi and Yi Li from the Master of International Economic and Commercial Law program (Class of 2022), He Yao from the Master of Laws in Criminal Justice program (Class of 2022), Sunchen Haojie from the undergraduate program (Class of 2020), and Huang Yuyang and Wang Kexin from the undergraduate program (Class of 2021).

Assistant Professor Wang Jia from the Faculty of Law served as the team's coach.

The International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition aims to simulate the legal procedures and trial practices of the International Criminal Court through virtual case simulations. It encourages students and professionals in the fields of international law, criminal law, and other related disciplines to gain a better understanding of international law, particularly the theory and practice of international criminal law, as well as the functions and rules of the court. The competition, conducted annually in multiple official languages of the United Nations, holds significant influence both domestically and internationally.

The preparation for this competition began in November 2022, involving rigorous team selection and study activities. All participating team members strived to balance their academic responsibilities with the pressure of the competition. Despite challenges, they courageously submitted three English pleadings comprising nearly ten thousand words by January 2023, achieving outstanding results and successfully advancing to the oral rounds. After intense preparation, research retrieval, and adjustments to their arguments, the team members Huang Yuyang and Yi Li served as advocates, while Wang Kexin and Zhang Meiqi acted as researchers during the oral rounds on March 18th. Their consistent performance and collaboration led the team to achieve this honorable recognition. Currently, the team is preparing to participate in the global competition scheduled to be held in The Hague, the Netherlands, in early June 2023.
