The 25th Sino-Luso International Medical Forum in Macau will take place on June, 26th, 27th and 28th. The topic for this event is, “Robotic Surgical Skills Training and Advanced Cardiothoracic Surgery”
One top robotic surgical expert and presenter, Professor Gan Lu, comments, “I am very much looking forward to coming over to attend this high level medical forum. By the way, this is my first time ever to visit Macau.” Prof. Gan Lu is from 3rd Military Medical University in Chongqing. He continues, “Robots are likely to be deployed widely in surgical procedures in the near future, perhaps in Macau, so I am happy to share my experiences with all the surgical experts during this forum. Among the rapid distribution of new emerging technologies in surgery, there are many gastrointestinal procedures are currently being carried out by using robots.
Prof. Gan Lu further noted, “In fact, robotics can resolve many of the shortcomings of laparoscopic procedures. For example, in anastomotic reconstructions, accuracy in vascular sutures, etc., robotics are improving patient recovery and survival. The movement of our wrists, for example, now allows us to expand to seven degrees of freedom by using robotic systems. The advantage of having tremor filtration is one of the many benefits by deployment of robotic arms in our operation theatres.”
This amazing 25th forum is proud to present robotic simulation by the Israeli expert Mr. Guy Benisty. Mr. Benisty remarks, “Robotic surgeries are generally less invasive, causes less pain and permits faster recoveries than conventional surgery. They are increasingly being used for urological, gynecological, GIs, and cardiothoracic surgeries. We will showcase two of our very best training systems this time in Macau. These are namely ‘Virtual Reality’ technologies that we are using computers to transmit accurately the feel and touch of surgery to create a training system that provides a highly realistic simulation of robotic surgery.”
Academic programs of this forum are chaired by Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST). The Vice President of the Hong Kong College of Surgeons, Professor Edward Lai comments, ¨Surgeons are now deploying VATS ‘video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery’ techniques to perform a variety of operations. For instance, we can perform biopsy to diagnose lung cancer, also esophagostomy procedures and hiatal hernia repair, etc. Our colleague from Jiangsu, Dr. Zhang Jing, will deliver his latest research on these remarkable surgical techniques.〃
The President of Sino Luso International Medical Forum, MUST Faculty of Health Sciences Dean and Professor Manson Fok, comments, ¨Robotics do not actually replace intelligence and skills of human beings. There is confidence that this is the surgery of the future. We are very excited to see theatre nurses will have the opportunity to be closer to the patient and to express themselves using the technology in the support of patient care.
Prof. Fok further explains, “Nurses training in robotic assisted surgery need to acquire skills in positioning the patient appropriately to ensure pressure points are padded and more importantly to avoid neuromuscular injuries to patients. In this instance, we will be bringing a nursing expert from China to share her experiences with our colleagues here in Macau.”
Experienced nursing director Yuan Jao, who is based in Chongqing’s heroic Southwest Hospital, comments, “I am working in operation theatres and our hospital is affiliated with the 3rd Military Medical University where Da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery was introduced in the operating theatre in 2006. I have been involved in this advanced clinical activity as a nursing director and act as a coordinator nurse in the robotic suite. I will share my experience particularly in team training involves all members of the robotic surgical team where surgeons and nurses needs to practice and learning together. The aim is to ensuring patient support and safe care for all.”
Two Portuguese surgical experts will also present in this forum too. They include Dr. Luis Sousa and Dr. Mario Evora, President of the Macau Cardiology Society. This forum will host scientific committee members from Hong Kong including, Dr. Henry Cheung and Dr. Clement Chiu. They will give highly informative lectures.
