A medical lecture was held successfully by the Faculty of Medicine on December 17, 2019 at N213. The speaker for this lecture was Professor So Kwok-fai, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of GHM Institute of CNS Regeneration at Jinan University, Guangzhou, China, and a famous neuroanatomist. Vice Deans of the Faculty of Medicine, Professor N.G. Patil and Chair Professor Christopher Lam, other teaching faculties, Associate Professor Vincent Wong and Associate Professor Betty Law of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine and more than 50 students attended the lecture and had a critical discussion with a lively exchange of ideas. The topic was “Potential Effects of Physical Exercise Intervention and Its Underlying Mechanisms on Pathological Conditions Including Chronic Fatigue and Depression”
In the lecture, Academician So pointed out that regular exercise can prevent and treatment of diseases, including those related to the central nervous system. In addition, he shared multiple studies on how physical exercise can reduce the incidence of mental illness and neurodegenerative diseases including depression, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, cognitive impairment and dementia. Appropriate level of physical exercise (such as aerobic running, resistance training, Tai Chi and Qigong) has significant therapeutic effects on the above diseases, while also improving human health and reducing related medical costs. In summary, regular and proper physical exercise will help maintain normal brain and nerve function.
During the Q & A session, teachers and students actively participated. Academician So answered the questions about the benefits and requirements of physical exercise and the scientific mysteries of sports and brain health.
