Sino-Luso International Medical Forum (Series One)

中葡国际医学论坛(系列一)

This 3-day forum event was chaired by the Macau University of Science and Technology, The Faculty of Health Sciences on 22nd to 24th May, 2011.

A team of prominent keynote speakers and researchers from the Commonwealth of Australia, the USA, Portugal, Hong Kong and Mainland China were invited in discuss the challenges facing the future of emergency care. A litany of specially designed workshops, keynote presentations and skills training programs were held separately at three different venues: the Centre of Excellence for Medical Professional Development at MUST, the lecture hall of the Stanley Ho Medical Development Foundation; and the lecture theatre of the Centro Hospitalar Conde de São Januário.

Keynote lectures included:-

Professor Dan Ramaer (Harvard Medical University, USA) on “Healthcare Team Simulation as a Malpractice Loss Prevention Technique and Disaster Planning”

Prof Wun Jun (The 3rd Military Medical University) on a real life story Senior Colonel military doctor commended by Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon. Prof Wu lead the rescue mission team into the heart of the major earthquake zone in Sichuan. His timely presentation on “Organization of Medical Rescue of Wenchuan and Yushu Earthquake” was a moving experience.

Prof Chen Ping - (Executive Member of Nuclear Medicine Association, CMA, PRC) presented on the topic of “Prevention and Management on Nuclear Catastrophe” with current reflections on Fukushima.

Dr Cate McIntosh (Hunter New England Skills and Simulation Centre, Australia) on New Directions in Simulation Based Education & Training in Emergency Response Capabilities.

Prof Katie Walker (Commonwealth Australia Health Workforce) on how to build a national simulation healthcare training program.

Amanda Grauze – (The Center, Skills Training Facility comprising The Ear Science Institute of Australia, University of Notre Dame, Australia and St John of God Healthcare) on a series of Train the Trainers Life Support Programs.

Keynote speaker from Hong Kong - Dr. Leung Ling-Pong ( (Fellow of Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine & Honorary Assistant Professor of Hong Kong University shared his insight on "How to improve the outcome of Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) in patients”.

Finally, Dean of Faculty, Dr. Manson Fok and a strong team of Macau experts in the field, including Vice-Director of Health Bureau of Macau, Dr Chan Wai Sin, Vice Superintendent of Government Hospital, Dr Lei Wai Seng, Dr Mario Evora, Dr Rui Furtado and others discussed and gave an overview of the latest development of emergency healthcare systems in Macau, SAR. The went over challenges Macau has been facing in the past and present including new plans of Taipa emergency departments scheduled to be opened in October 2011.
