Sino-Luso International Medical Forum (Series Eleven)

This 3-day forum was chaired by the Macau University of Science and Technology: Faculty of Health Sciences and organized by the Macau Healthcare Management and Promotion Association (MHMPA) on the 18th – 20th January in Macau SAR, China.

Titled “Histocompatibility, Immunogenetics and Personalized Medicine”. Providing latest updates on some of the major issues in health science in the 21st century. Sensational topics included, Stem Cell Transplantation, Transfusion medicine, Immunogenetics, Pharmacogenetics & Personalized Medicine, etc.

This Sino-Luso forum brought together prominent international scientists, doctors and experts from Portugal, France, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China.

Dr. Manson Fok, Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences at the Macau University of Science and Technology stated during the forum, “We are indeed honoured to have the great minds from Portugal, Prof. Manuel Sobrinho Simões and Dr. Helena Alves here presenting in this forum. Connecting Portuguese speaking counties to Macau is a key priority of our faculty. By bringing such distinguished international speakers to this forum through this series on hematology and oncology reflects our commitment to excellence in skills training and continuing medical education.”

Our keynote presenter, Dr. Wufang Fan, from mainland China, is an expert in gene transcript analyses as well as protein interaction and molecular epidemiology studies. Dr. Fan was a World Health Organization Fellow in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at the Harvard University School of Medicine. Dr. Fan has filed over 30 patent applications, also an author on over 30 publications and has been invited to dinner at the White House by US president George W Bush.

This meeting also brought together the best and latest findings in areas of cancer research. Through educational sessions and roundtable discussions, Prof. Alejandro Madrigal from Royal Free Hospital, London, the Elected President of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation shared his experiences in stem cell transplantation for solid tumors.

From University Paris Diderot, France, Dr. Dominique Charron presented his papers describing the latest discovery of Immunogenetics and Pharmacogenetics.

Experts from Hong Kong also presented at the forum. They included Dr. Au Wing Yan and his papers in Oral Arsenic drugs. Also, Prof Gregory Cheng shared his insights in the area of personalized transfusion.

Dr. Chan Nai Chi (Macau), the President of the Macau Society of Hematology and Oncology presented an interesting topic in “Functional Benefits of Fungi in Anti-cancer treatment”.

Dr. Manson Fok, The President of Sino-Luso International Medical Forum said, ”In an effort to enhance collaboration in training and education, Portugal and Macau signed a MOU between our faculty and The Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto.”

This event is supported by the Ministry of Health, PRC as well as a list of outstanding healthcare organizations and Portuguese speaking associations in Macau.
