The Macao Environmental Research Institute held an academic report on "Precise forecast of extreme weather such as typhoons and rain and disaster prevention in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area"

On July 27, 2021, the Macao Environmental Research Institute of Macau University of Science and Technology invited Professor Wang Donghai, a well-known expert in the field of severe weather in China and Professor Wang Donghai from the School of Atmospheric Sciences, Sun Yat-Sen University, to give an academic report titled “Accurate forecast and disaster prevention of extreme weather such as typhoon and rain in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area” in the classroom N221. This academic report was sponsored by the Macau Foundation. All faculty of the Macao Environmental Research Institute, researchers and graduate students in related fields of the university participated in the academic exchanges. Representatives from the Meteorological Bureau, the Maritime and Water Affairs Bureau, the Municipal Administration and other government departments also attended this academic report.

Professor Donghai Wang is the leader of the introduction of the "Hundred Talents Program" of Sun Yat-sen University, the first batch of leading scientific and technological talents of the China Meteorological Administration, the chief scientist of the national major research and development program, and a doctoral supervisor. Research directions include severe weather dynamics, tropical convective systems (typhoons, rainstorms, etc.), numerical weather forecasting, numerical simulation, and meteorological data assimilation and analysis applications. He has presided over or presided over a number of major national research and development projects, key fund and general projects, national 973 projects and business forecast research and development projects in related industries. He has published more than 130 papers, including more than 100 papers in SCI journals.

Before the meeting, Ma Yibing, Dean of the Macao Environmental Research Institute, gave a welcome speech. At the meeting, Professor Wang Donghai comprehensively and systematically introduced the status quo of extreme weather in the Greater Bay Area and cutting-edge weather numerical forecasting techniques and methods, combined with " Typhoon Hato ", " Typhoon Mangkhut " and recent extreme precipitation events, case explanations were carried out. Finally, the countermeasures against severe weather in Macau were discussed and suggested. Dean Ma Yibing, Assistant Professor You Yan, and representatives of the participants had a lively discussion and exchanges with Professor Wang Donghai on the content of the report, the construction of the Macao field station, and opportunities for cooperation in multiple fields. The graduate students of the Macao Environmental Research Institute also gained a deeper understanding of extreme weather forecasting and disaster prevention in Macao and the Greater Bay Area through this academic exchange.

At present, the Macao Environmental Research Institute has officially hired Professor Wang Donghai as a part-time professor. In the future, it will conduct cooperative research in the fields of high-resolution weather numerical forecasting in Macao, disaster risk assessment and defense, regional air pollution and climate change two-way feedback, and jointly contribute to the Greater Bay Area and make positive contributions to ecological environment construction and climate change response.
