M.U.S.T. Held “Cross-Strait Science and Technology Library Services Cooperation and Innovation Seminar and Opening Ceremony for Macao Sci-Tech Information Service Center”

On November 10, 2016, the “Cross-Strait Science and Technology Library Services Cooperation and Innovation Seminar and Opening Ceremony for Macao Sci-Tech Information Service Center” was held at N101 of the library building of Macau University of Science and Technology. Mr. Xu Jun, Assistant Deputy Director-General of the Economic Affairs Department and representative of Director-General of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau S.A.R., Mr. Sou Chio Fai, Director of the Tertiary Education Services Office, Ms. Zhong Yi, Vice Chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Macao Foundation, Mr. Ran Bo, Director of Functions of Policy Research Department of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao Special Administrative Region, Mr. Liu Liang Gang, Advisor on science and technology and Representative of the Chairman of Macau Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), Mr. Peng Yi Qi, Director of National Science and Technology Library, and Prof. Pang Chuan, Vice President of Macau University of Science and Technology served as the officiating guests of the event. During the event, Director Peng Yi Qi of the National Science and Technology Library and Vice President Jiang Zhi Hong of M.U.S.T. unveiled the plaque of Macao Sci-Tech Information Service Center.

When addressing the ceremony, Vice President Pang Chuan of M.U.S.T. noted that M.U.S.T. took the initiative to establish the Macao Sci-Tech Information Service Center for two purposes: for one, it was hoped that the Center would help to strengthen ties and partnerships with renowned university libraries and other library service providers across the two straits and four regions and introduce advanced techniques and notions to Macau; for another, it was hoped that the Center could fully mobilize resources of all available sources so as to provide timely and effective literature availability for the University’s research engagements, and also provide services for other local universities of Macau, governmental units, and local researchers, enabling M.U.S.T. to have one more platform to use to give it back to the community and make contributions for Macau’s science and technology advancement and social development.

Director Peng Yi Qi of the National Science and Technology Library also spoke at the event, noting that entering the twenty-first century, science and technology library services must catch up closely with the demands of emerging disciplines, emerging hot topics, and new developments, act to provide timely guarantee of science and technology literature services for science researchers in their explorations of the future and their conduct in innovative research, and offer better services for the development of national economy and education. Prof. Peng believes that the “Macao Sci-Tech Information Service Center” established by Macau University of Science and Technology is bound to become an important source for researchers and teachers of the Macau region to have access to science and technology literature resources, and make positive contributions to Macau’s science development and social advancement.

Under the witness of Assistant Deputy Director-General Xu Jun of the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau S.A.R., Director Sou Chio Fai of the Tertiary Education Services Office, Vice Director Tang Xiao Li of the Institute of Medical Information of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and Vice President Pang Su Seng of M.U.S.T., as supporting libraries for the Library of Macau University of Science and Technology, National Science and Technology Library (NSTL), China Academic Library & Information System (CALIS), China Academic Digital Associative Library (CADAL), and Taiwan University, signed cooperation agreements with Library of M.U.S.T., agreeing to embark on in-depth collaborations in providing library services, personnel training, academic exchanges, and other fields.

During the past sixteen years since M.U.S.T. was founded, the University has had fast development, program structure gets enlarged, research fields get broadened, and hence the increasing demand for science and technology literature by the university’s science research team. The Library of M.U.S.T. hopes that while ensuring purchase of core library resources and abiding by copyright law and other relevant laws, it can seek for maximal sharing mechanism to share the benefits of other parties. After several decades’ perseverant efforts, the university libraries and library services providers across the two straits and four regions, particularly the mainland Chinese universities and Ministry of Science and Technology have had several large-scale projects, not only have made impressive achievements in ensuring library services and accumulated rich experience in project resources and management, but also are undertaking continuous innovation in services and transformation of technology; they’ve set up a great example for Macau to learn from.

More than 60 people attended the event, including people in charge of library services from the National Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Library of China, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Xi’an Jiaotong Unviersity, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Taiwan University, Taiwan Chiao Tung University, and other renowned university libraries and library service providers across the two straits, librarians from local university libraries and public libraries, experts, and other practitioners of library services.
