Chair Professor Zhang Keke appointed as Director of Space Science Institute and Lunar and Planetary Science Laboratory

Chair Professor Zhang Keke of Macau University of Science and Technology has been appointed as Director of the Space Science Institute and Director of the Lunar and Planetary Science Laboratory, effective from July 1, 2018.

Chair Professor Zhang Keke is a renowned astrophysicist, and Fellow of American Geophysical Union and the Royal Astronomical Society in the UK. He currently serves as Director of the Centre for Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics College at the University of Exeter. He is an overseas reviewer of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. In 2013, he received an achievement award in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) by the Royal Astronomical Society.

Chair Professor Zhang Keke’s main research interest is planetary physics. He received his Bachelor degree in astronomy at Nanjing University and his master degree and PhD at the University of California, Los Angeles, USA. From 1987 to 1992, he completed the postdoc studies at the University of California, and the University of Cambridge. He has served as Director of the Mathematics Institute of the University of Exeter (ranked as No.6 among UK universities), and Editor-in-Chief for Journal of Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors.

Chair Professor Zhang Keke has directed and participated in a number of major research projects sponsored by major foundations in the UK, the USA, China, and Hong Kong. He has published more than 190 papers at world top journals, including Science, Nature, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Reports on Progress in Physics, and Journal of the Royal Society amongst many others.

Chair Professor Zhang Keke has rich experience in both teaching and administration, and a great many impressive research achievements in planetary science. The University believes that his leadership would not only accelerate the improvement of M.U.S.T. in its academic standards of space science research, but also fasten the growth of young researchers and make greater contributions to elevation of Macau’s scientific stamina and the future development of the national space science.
