M.U.S.T. Unveils Plaque for “State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Science”

The 2018 Award Presentation Ceremony for Macao Science and Technology Awards and Ceremony for Inauguration of New State Key Laboratory was held at the Grand Auditorium of Macao Cultural Center in the afternoon of October 8, 2018. At the award presentation ceremony, Chief Executive Chui Sai On of the Macao S.A.R., Vice Minister Zhang Jianguo of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, ,President Liu Liang of Macau University of Science and Technology unveiled the plaque for the “State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Science”, which is the second state key lab of M.U.S.T., following the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines.

The inauguration of the “State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Science” will elevate Macao’s stand in science and technology and become another highlight and bright spot of Macao in the course of science and technology innovations. It represents the frontier of science and technology, and has potentials in translational applications of high-tech outcomes and in becoming an outstanding benchmark for academia. As such, it will enable the development of high-end innovative enterprises and firms by virtue of industry-education-research synergy, provide momentums for Macao to assume greater roles in participating in science and technology innovations at the Greater Bay Area, contribute to adequate diversified sustainable development of Macao economy, and construct a new science and technology highland in the Greater Bay Area.

Officiating guests who attended the Ceremony include Chief Executive Chui Sai On, Mr. Zheng Xiaosong, Director-General of the Liaison Office of Central People’s Government of the P.R.C. in the Macao S.A.R., Vice Minister Zhang Jianguo, , Ms. Shen Beili, Commissioner of the Commissioners’ Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Macao S.A.R., Mr. Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Macao. S.A.R. Government, Mr. Lam Kam Seng, Vice President of the Science and Technology Council of the Macao, and Mr. Ma Chi Ngai, Chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao. The ceremony was also attended by approximately one thousand representatives from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Hong Kong Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, the departments of the Central Government stationed in Macao and local governmental units, higher institutions, research institutes, science and technology societies and secondary schools.

At the 2018 Macao Science and Technology Awards, M.U.S.T. had four projects winning prizes. A 2nd prize of Natural Science Awards by “Molecular mechanism of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), an endogenous metabolite, and potential of candidate compounds for drug discovery”, a project of Prof. Zhu Yi Zhun, Dean of the School of Pharmacy, and Associate Prof. Xie Ying (Picture 1).A 3rd prize of Natural Science Awards by “New Methodologies of Control and Scheduling for Discrete Event Systems”, a project of Prof. Wu Naiqi, Director of the Macau Institute of System Engineering, Prof. Li Zhiwu and Prof. Zhou Mengchu of the Faculty of Information Technology, and Assistant Prof. Chen Yufeng and Assistant Prof. Qiao Yan of the Macau Institute of System Engineering (Picture 2). Two 3rd prizes of Technology Invention Awards, respectively, by “Key technologies and applications of optical fiber sensing with high precision and low cost” and “Key Techniques in Visual Media Computing”, the principal investigators of the first are Prof. Li Jianqing, Assistant Dean of Faculty of Information Technology, Xu Ben and Pan Yuanyuan (Picture 3), and the principal investigators of the later are Prof. Cai Zhanchuan of Faculty of Information Technology, Lan Ting, Cao Wei and Ye Ben (Picture 4). In addition, 12 graduate students from M.U.S.T. won Graduates Awards.
