M.U.S.T. Held Flag-Raising Ceremony
Launching Celebration of 19th Anniversary
Along with the national anthem, the Five-Star red flag, the Macao S.A.R. flag and the M.U.S.T. flag were raised in unison
Macau University of Science and Technology held a Flag-Raising Ceremony and Ceremony for Launching the University’s 19th Anniversary in front of its Administrative Building in the morning of February 28, 2019. President Liu Liang, Vice President Tong Ka Lok, Vice President Jiang Zhihong, Vice President Pang Chuan, Vice President Lin Zhijun, Teaching Excellence Award winner Assistant Prof. Cheang Chak Fong, M.U.S.T. 1st-year graduates alumni representative Mr. Huang Hui, Chairman Gao Ya of the Graduate Students Union, and Chairman Zhao Han of the Students Union attended and officiated the Ceremony. Also joining the Ceremony were more than 300 members from the university management, teachers and students. The Ceremony marks the beginning of a month-long celebration of the university anniversary offering a series of events and activities.
The Launching Ceremony of the 19th Anniversary Celebration commenced following the raising of flags. President Liu Liang spoke at the Ceremony, noting that over the past year, the University has been blessed with unwavering support and help from the Central People’s Government, the Macao S.A.R. Government, the M.U.S.T. Foundation, the University Council, the University Advisory Committee, and prominent individuals of the social communities. The University graduates and alumni have shown great concerns with the development of their alma mater, the university teachers and students have been striving for excellence through hard work and dedication, and the tertiary education and innovative science and technology development of the University has been given concerns and expectations by the national government, which has led to steady fast progress and continuous enhancement of the University’s strengths. The University was approved by the Macao S.A.R. Government to offer Macao’s first “Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery” (MBBS) program, and inaugurated a new faculty at the University – the Faculty of Medicine – on March 1st, aiming to become a medicine school with high standards, high qualities and international profile, so as to train medical professionals, who have both noble ethical standards and skillful medical techniques and expertise, for Macao and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area. The University unveiled plaques for the four Ministry Of Education key joint research bases partnering with four mainland Chinese universities, respectively in the field of law, ocean studies, communication, and Chinese medicines; the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines has yielded great academic accomplishments, and following their last win in 2014, the research team of the key laboratory won another 1st prize at the Natural Science Awards of the Ministry of Education in 2018, making the University the sole higher institution from the Hong Kong and Macao region winning the prize. Furthermore, the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences was inaugurated, and it has become a new bright spot of Macao’s science and technology innovation. Moreover, the University made new historic records in various research projects, academic papers, patents authorizations, and teachers and students awards. The University had five professors from engineering, mathematics and biochemistry enlisted in the 2018 Highly-Cited Researchers; the number represents the highest among all universities in Macao; at the final of the 4th China “Internet+” College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, M.U.S.T. students claimed a total of 14 prizes, including 1 gold, 2 silvers and 10 bronzes, and a team excellence award; the number of prizes again represents the highest in the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan region. The University values the cultivation of patriotic consciousness, family awareness, and legal awareness in students, and has organized students to participate in the “Ten Thousand Persons Scheme” visit to the mainland sponsored by the Ministry of Education and continued to adopt the “Freshmen High Quality Education Scheme”. Looking forward, the University will continue to implement the important instructions by Chairman Xi Jinping, plan the blueprint of the University for future development, “train more patriotic talents, create more science and technology outcomes, propel the sustainable development and diversification of Macao economy, join forces to facilitate the growth of the Bay Area, and make contributions to the realization of the China Dream of rejuvenating the nation.

After the Presidents’ speech, the officiating guests acted in unison to switch on the celebration lights, which features “19th Anniversary”, and opened the month-long anniversary festival. The crowd sang the university anthem to the sound of the music band. In celebration of the 19th anniversary, the University will present a series of events and activities, including a ceremony to confer honorary doctoral degrees, major academic conferences, exhibitions and contests, amongst many others.
