Macao S.A.R. Science and Technology Innovation and Development Strategists Expert Panel Visits M.U.S.T.

The Macao S.A.R. Science and Technology Innovation and Development Strategists Expert Panel visited Macau University of Science and Technology in the afternoon of July 10, 2019. The delegation was warmly welcomed by President Liu Liang, Vice President Jiang Zhihong, Vice President Kwong Ying Wa, and several departmental heads of the University.

Members of the Science and Technology Innovation and Development Strategist Expert Panel who attended the visit include Academician Yao Xinsheng, professor from College of Pharmacy, Jinan University, Academician Wang Lijun, researcher from Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Song Yonghua, President of the University of Macau and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, Prof. Pan Jiaofeng, Director of the Institutes of Science and Development, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Wang Duoxiang, concurrent Director of the Innovation Education and Research Institute, Peking University, and Beijing Institute of Collaborative Innovation, Prof. Wang Yitao, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines (University of Macau), Prof. Sun Fuquan, Vice President of China Academy of Science and Technology Development Strategy, Prof. Chen Baoming, Director of the General Development Institute of China Academy of Science and Technology Development Strategy, Prof. Chen Weijian from Tsinghua University, Vice President of Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute, Prof. Mai Peiran, and Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed Signal VLSI (University of Macau). Also joining the delegation are members of the Secretariat of the Chief Executive of the Macao S.A.R., including Advisor Lai U Meng, Advisor Cheong Kok Kei, Technician Ieong Koi On and Administrative Technical Assistant Wong Kam Wah, and members of the Policy Research and Regional Development Bureau, including Vice Director Lin Yuan, Administrative Officer Wu Tianhao, Researcher Lian Xinsen, Zhang Xiaodan, Gao Xiaoting, Wang Jinjiang and Li Mingjian.

President Liu Liang delivered a speech

President Liu Liang spoke at the reception to express warm welcome to the visiting guests, and gave an introduction to the educational philosophies, major development, research achievements, and development visions of the University. President Liu made the point that M.U.S.T. has been adopting the educational policy of attaching equal importance to both teaching and research and seizing tight two key factors, quality and innovation; over the years, the University has brought in 300 outstanding teaching and research talents, to address the needs of Macao, formulate new highlands for innovative science and technology that are unique of Macao, and therefore extend Macao’s strengths to integrate into and contribute to the bigger pictures of national development and construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Vice Director Lin Yuan shared her views, mentioning that as an alumni of M.U.S.T., the fast development of the University in the past 19 years is visible. She hoped that by way of this visit by the expert panel, the University could combine the actual situations in Macao and its own strengths to make more contributions for science innovation in Macao.

Vice President Jiang Zhihong remarked that the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines has become an important relying platform for innovative science and technology development of Chinese Medicine in the Greater Bay Area. It won a number of high-level science and technology awards and published 1000 papers in 5 years, including in world’s top science journals such as NatureScience and Cell.

Prof. Zhang Keke, Director of the M.U.S.T. Space Science Institute and the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences, mentioned that the latter is the first of the kind in China. The laboratory aims to cultivate high-end planetary sciences talents to meet the strategic demands of the country in science and technology development and deep space exploration and in the meantime contribute to the moderate diversification of Macao’s economy.

Academician Yao Xinsheng noted that effectiveness and safety are highly important characteristic of drugs, and M.U.S.T. owns an elite team and high-standard facilities. He hoped the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines creates more outstanding research outcomes to carry on and disperse the cultural spirits of Chinese Medicines.

Academician Wang Lijun mentioned that the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences has unique characteristics in its research orientations. He expected the laboratory to expand collaborations with the relevant departments of space exploration programs and contribute to the development of key deep space exploration programs of the nation.

Advisor Lai U Meng noted that the science and technology standard of local universities has reached a higher level, enabling feedback to the community. He expected them to establish and expand friendly interactions and collaborations with the industry and help to transfer outstanding technology outcomes from Macao to the mainland or even to international platforms.

Director Pan Jiaofeng marked that M.U.S.T. has advanced educational philosophies and is developing fast. He suggested room for collaboration between the University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the sourcing and integration of special data, and further advised the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines to think in the long run from multiple perspectives such as early prevention, early treatment and best practices, so as to bring the science and technology capacity of M.U.S.T. to a greater and stronger level.

Director Wang Duo Xiang expressed that as a non-profit comprehensive university, M.U.S.T. could further exert its research strengths to fully integrate with the social demands and create uniqueness of M.U.S.T.’s own.

Vice President Sun Fuquan noted that universities play a key role in urban development. Impressed by the two unique state key laboratories of M.U.S.T. and their major research breakthroughs, he expects the University to play a greater role in national and international platforms.

Following the reception, President Liu Liang, accompanied by the university management, led the delegation on a tour to the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines and the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences.
