CASS President Xie Fuzhan visits M.U.S.T.
Wishes to Reinforce Cooperation in Humanities and Social Sciences

President Xie Fuzhan of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) led a delegation on a visit to Macau University of Science and Technology in the afternoon of August 12th, 2019. The guests were warmly welcomed by Chancellor Liu Chak Wan, Vice President Tong Ka Lok, University Council Member Chen Jimin, and Assistant Director Zhao Dianhong of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research of M.U.S.T.

During the reception meeting, Chancellor Liu Chak Wan gave the visiting guests an introduction of the educational philosophies of the University, its course of development over the past 19 years, as well as the management’s visions for the future of the University. The Chancellor pointed out that as a non-profit private university, M.U.S.T. was ranked 21st among the “2018 Ranking of Top Universities in Greater China” released by Shanghai Ranking and, thanks to the continuous support by the S.A.R. Government, was approved to establish a Faculty of Medicine earlier this year becoming the sole institution in Macao with both Chinese and Western medicine programs. The University has published a great number of research papers in world famous academic journals; its abundant research output has been recognized and affirmed by the communities.

CASS President Xie responded that he was delighted to see that as a young vigorous university, M.U.S.T. had been able to make such remarkable achievements within only 19 years of time, and that he concurred on the importance of universities for the long-term development of the society. President Xie encouraged M.U.S.T. to make active endeavors to stand in line with the moderate diversification of Macao and cultivate talents for the future of Macao and the nation. Afterwards, the President gave a general introduction on the history of the establishment of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and its six academic divisions.

During the talks, the two parties reviewed the collaboration between the Institute for Social and Cultural Research of M.U.S.T. and the Institute of History, among other institutes, of CASS in developing research projects and teaching work particularly in history, international relations and other areas, and agreed that the two parties should build on the existing work and deepen cooperation. Taking advantage of important platforms of the CASS, such as the Institute of History and the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the two parties could seek further collaborations in co-building platforms, research output, attain mutual support and motivation, and co-develop in conducting high-level research and training high-quality talents. Also, collaborate in research, integrate succession and disseminate Chinese history and culture with patriotic values of “Love China, Love Macao”, support young students of Macao to understand the great historic and cultural traditions of our nation and the national course of development. In the long run, these actions will promote the evolution of humanities and social sciences in Macao and make academic contributions to the new practices of“One Country, Two Systems”, aid the formation of new outlooks of China to open up in the new era and support the stability and prosperity of Macao.

Other visiting members of the delegation include Director Huang Ping of the Institute of European Studies, Director-General Wang Lei of the Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, Deputy Director Zhang Zhiqiang of the Institute of Philosophy, Director Wang Chaoyang of the General Office, and Director Li Chuyu of the Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of CASS.
