M.U.S.T. Computer Science Ranked in Top 150 in the World University Subject Rankings for the First Time

In the ‘Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020’ released by the UK Times Higher Education, Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.) made the list for the first time, ranked among the top 251-300. Following the overall rankings, a suite of 11 subject-specific rankings were published successively.

Computer Science in M.U.S.T was ranked between 126-150 for the first time in the ‘THE World University Rankings 2020’ by subject, leading Macao’s universities in this field.

The subject ranking tables employ the same range of 13 performance indicators used in the overall World University Rankings 2020, brought together with scores provided under five categories. However, the methodology is carefully recalibrated for each subject, with the weightings changed to suit the individual fields. The weightings for the computer science ranking are:

Teaching: the learning environment 30%

Research: publication volume, income and reputation 30 %

Citations: research influence 27.5%

International outlook: staff, students and research 7.5%

Industry income: innovation 5.0%

Since 2015, the Faculty of Information Technology in Macau University of Science and Technology has received 84 scientific research project grants from the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), with a total funding of more than 87 million patacas (MOP) and over 4 million yuan (RMB). In addition to obtaining more than 130 patents including Chinese invention patents, US patents and Australian innovation patents, the faculty has published nearly 500 research papers and has received multiple Macao Science and Technology Awards containing one third prize in Natural Science Award, three third prizes in Technical Invention Award, and eight Science and Technology Research & Development awards for Postgraduates.

The faculty has established a new generation of artificial intelligence supercomputing system, private cloud system, electrical power laboratory, optical fiber sensing and communication among other experimental platforms. In terms of the commercialization of scientific and research findings, the Smart Sign-in System, Smart Access Control System, and Cloud Printing Terminal have been put into use; the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge License Plate Recognition System has been in operation for more than a year; and furthermore the Human Facial and Body Recognition system and the Dense Crowd Counting system have entered the operational testing phase.
