M.U.S.T. Management Visits Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Macao Special Administrative Region

Chancellor of Macau University of Science and Technology, Dr. Liu Chak Wan led the university management and scientific research specialists on a visit to Acting Commissioner Wang Dong of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao Special Administrative Region on September 15, 2020. Acting Commissioner Wang Dong first extended warm welcome to Chancellor Liu and the rest of the M.U.S.T. delegation and expressed sincere support to the research and teaching work of M.U.S.T. and discussed further cooperation in the future.

Dr. Liu expressed thanks to of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its support to M.U.S.T. over the past 20 years. With the support of the Office, the Ambassadorial Lectures Series of the University has been held successfully for years, which has enabled the university students to come to better understanding of the foreign affairs work of our motherland and its development in the world’s foreign affairs community. M.U.S.T. has scheduled to hold its 20th anniversary celebrations in November and Chancellor Liu warmly invited Acting Commissioner Wang to attend the event and share the joys of celebration with M.U.S.T.

Vice President Pang Chuan introduced the major development and achievements of M.U.S.T. over the past recent years. With the great support of the Central Government and the Macao S.A.R. Government M.U.S.T. has achieved substantial growth in overall educational strengths and academic ranking. The University has carried out a full implementation of the important instructions from Chairman Xi Jinping to Macao universities, upholding and acting in the spirit of patriotism to the country and love to Macao, fostering a sense of commitment to family in students. The University has made proactive efforts to implement the policy of attaching equal importance to teaching and research, act fully in the key spirit of “quality” and “innovation”, bring in and cultivate outstanding academic backbones so as to grow a competitive and sustainable teaching force. During the pandemics, the University carried out a speedy deployment of “Cloud Classroom” and online teaching and quickly assembled an excellent research force devoted to combat against COVID-19, which landed the University at the top in its number of key science and technology research projects subsidized by the S.A.R. Government and made the University the main battleground of Macao’s science and technology efforts to fight against the epidemics. The University opened Macao’s first Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and inaugurated the Faculty of Medicine to cultivate professional medical forces for Macao and for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The University owns two 2 state key laboratories and 4 partner research bases and joint laboratories with key institutes of Ministry of Education and has received a plethora of state-level and provincial/ministerial level awards and prizes. Looking ahead, the University aims to expedite transfer of research outcomes, contribute to a bright prospect of industry-education-research synergetic development, and help foster adequately diversified economy and sustainable development in Macao. The University is also committed to creating a harmonious campus, helping students accomplish all-round growth and improving the rates of students taking employment and further studies. The University hopes to fully exert Macao’s One Country, Two Systems policy system and advantages, stand in close alignment with the demand of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in science and technology development and cultivation of talents, play to the characteristics and strengths of M.U.S.T., deepen cooperation with Bay Area organizations, and integrate proactively into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area national strategy.

Vice President Tong Ka Lok explained the efforts of M.U.S.T. to bring in global outstanding researchers, specialists and scholars for exchange and communication. Vice President Jiang Zhihong introduced the research achievements of Prof. Zhang Kang of Faculty of Medicine in joint collaboration research of recombination vaccines, citing that Prof. Zhang has published the relevant research results in the world’s top journals and has made contributions to the global effort in prevention and control of COVID-19.

Director Zhang Keke of the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences followed with an introduction of the state key lab. The laboratory is the only state key laboratory of China in space science research as well as the only research center of the National Space Administration. It takes as its objectives to make contributions to the national strategic development and Macao’s diversified development and has developed projects in the space science field such as Macao’s first science satellite Macao Science 1.

Acting Commissioner Wang Dong responded that the role of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao S.A.R. is to drive the development of foreign exchanges of the Macao S.A.R. M.U.S.T. is a higher institution founded after the return of Macao to the motherland. With only 20 years, the University has accomplished fast growth and remains strong and vigorous. It has made extraordinary achievements and delightful news about M.U.S.T. comes to people’s ears frequently. M.U.S.T., be it nationally, globally or Asia-wide, has been growing continuously in rankings. Today, through the introductions given by the university management, has developed deeper understanding of the university and felt amazed that the University is filled with hopes and visions to its future development. The acting commissioner further marked that foreign affairs has made a great entry point for “One Country” education and M.U.S.T. is full of vigor and is innovation-driven. The university has made proactive efforts in driving internationalization for its development of teaching and research, is equipped with top-standard scientific research forces, and has been a leading force in cultivation of talents with patriotism toward the nation and love toward Macao. She expected the university to further make good use of the “One Center, One Platform, One Base” advantages, promote foreign exchanges, devote to the satisfaction of Macao’s diversified needs, develop brands with Macao characteristics, and make contributions to the development of the S.A.R. and the nation. What’s more, the acting commissioner cited a recent remark from Chairman Xi on September 11 that science and technology innovation remains the No.1 drive to satisfy the needs of national development, which she would like to share with M.U.S.T. She believes that under the leadership of Chancellor Liu and the university management, M.U.S.T. will have greater progress ahead and the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would continue to support the development of M.U.S.T.
