[Upcoming Event] “Dose-effect of Formula” Anniversary Master Series of Science and Technology Lecture presented by Academician Tong Xiao Lin, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Specialist in traditional Chinese medicine internal medicine.

The Macau University of Science and Technology will hold an Anniversary Master Series of Science and Technology Lecture on 27th March 2024 at 11:30 in N101 Hall. Academician Tong Xiaolin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Specialist in traditional Chinese medicine internal medicine and the Director of the National Center for Chinese and Western Medicine Integration, will be invited to give a lecture on “Dose-effect in Medicine Prescription”.

Academician Tong has long been committed to the inheritance and innovative research of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and has integrated Chinese medicine concept of “State-modulation” with the Western medicine concept of “Targets” strategy. He first proposed the concept of “State-target differentiation and treatment” and restructured a new system for TCM diagnosis and treatment. He established a new system for TCM diagnosis and treatment for diabetes with the framework of “core pathogenesis-classification-stage and syndrome differentiation”. He won the He Liang He Li Science and Technology Progress Award and the National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize.

He has pioneered the reconstruction of the modern herbal system of TCM, integrated the pharmacological targets of Chinese medicine and the traditional theory of drug properties, and achieved “mutual adjustment of State-target”. He has revealed the laws of “quantity-induced innovation” and “quantity-induced counteraction”, and constructing a theoretical framework for the efficacy and dosage of herbal formulas with “individualized dosing and dosage threshold” as the core, laying an important foundation for promoting Chinese medicine into the “quantitative” era.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, as the leader of the national Chinese medicine medical rescue expert group, the leader of the Chinese medicine epidemic prevention and control expert committee of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the leader of the central aid Hong Kong anti-epidemic expert group, he went to the front line of the epidemic in 12 provinces and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to guide rescue work. He innovatively constructed the “Wuchang model” for community prevention and control, formulated the general treatment method “Hanshiyi Formula (Wuhan Anti-epidemic No.1 Formula)”, developed the first listed new medicine “Sanhan Huashi Granules” for cold and damp epidemic diseases, and formulated and launched the “four plans” for COVID-19 treatment, making significant contributions to epidemic prevention and control work. He was awarded the national “Most Beautiful Science and Technology Worker” by the Central Propaganda Department and other departments, the “National Innovation and Advancement Award Medal” by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and the “National Advanced Individual in Fighting COVID-19” by the CPC Central Committee and other honors.

Abstract:

All along, the dosage theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) needs to be more thorough and in a systematic research. There is still no scientific support or theoretical basis for clinical dosage selection and safety. Therefore, comprehensively exploring the original dosage of TCM, expanding the existing dosage threshold, and researching the scientific and reasonable dosage theory to improve the clinical efficacy of TCM and deeply investigate its mechanism of action are essential research directions. Academician Tong Xiaolin, with the theme of "seeking truth through quantity and effect," sought to achieve the goal of keeping the correctness of TCM and creating newness and carried out in-depth discussions on the problems such as the "mistake and confusion" of the dosage inheritance of TCM prescriptions, answered the issues of the study of prescriptions for many years, and demonstrated the groundbreaking research results and progress of the team in the aspect of dosage. Based on this, while improving the clinical efficacy of TCM, through a multi-angle evidence-based study of Zhang Zhongjing's prescriptions, the team established practical guidelines for the use of prescription dosage in clinical practice and put forward a new concept of classifying and applying dosage, forming the strategy for the clinical application of prescription dosage (expert consensus), sets a new model of "rationale, methodology, prescription, medication and dosage" in TCM. Academician Tong Xiaolin focuses on improving the efficacy of TCM as well as providing effective diabetes treatment, and the results have been incorporated into domestic and international TCM guidelines. By constructing the theory of prescription dosage, the efficacy of acute and critical illnesses has been dramatically improved, providing new ideas for expanding the study of drug indications, promoting the transformation of classical prescriptions into new drugs, clarifying the relationship among dosage, effect, and toxicity, also optimizing the dosage recommendation range of Pharmacopoeia, thus laying an essential foundation for the development of traditional Chinese medicine towards the era of quantification.
