Ann Hui On Wah, Doctor of Humanities honoris causa


Dr. Ann Hui On Wah is a renowned film director, producer and screenwriter. She graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honour) and a Master of Arts. She furthered her studies at the London Film School, graduating with a Diploma (First Class Honour). After returning to Hong Kong, she had worked as an assistant to the eminent King Hu. She had directed numerous documentaries, among other genres, for HKTVB, the HK Independent Commission Against Corruption, and Radio Hong Kong. The genres her work traverses are as wide-ranging as the subject-matter: they range from literary adaptation, martial art, semi-autobiography, women’s issue, social phenomenon, political changes to horror movies. Outstandingly, she is the only director to have won six Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Director. She has moreover won the 77th Venice International Film Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award, in addition to having thrice won the Golden Horse Award for Best Director, thus rendering her as one of the only four most frequent winners of the Golden Horse Award for Best Director.
