Yang Fu Jia, Doctor of Science honoris causa


Prof. Yang Fu Jia is a scientist, an educator, and moreover, a warrior for idealism.

As a scientist, he was selected by the Chinese government in his twenties to study at the world renowned Niels Bohr Institute, as a visiting scholar. There he appreciated the charm of the Copenhagen spirit. Later, he founded the world-class Accelerator Lab at Fudan University. He became an internationally known, eminent physicist by virtue of his brilliant achievements in energy level formulae, lifespan measurement of the nuclear energy level, and ion beam analysis, amongst other areas. He was the former president of the Shanghai Atomic and Nuclear Energy Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Science, and he was promoted to be an academician of the Chinese Academy of Science and The Third World Academy of Sciences.

As an educator, he was the former president of Fudan University in the 1990s. He initiated the program ‘Famous Professors Teaching Basic Courses’ to enhance undergraduate education. Great opportunities offered by him have also uncovered many emerging talents. He founded the Fudan School of Development, strengthening the university’s function as a think-tank. The teaching, research and social services of Fudan University have moved to a higher level due to his work. His achievements have astounded the international education circle. He was appointed the Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, and this is the first time that a Chinese academician has become Chancellor of a UK university.

As a warrior for idealism, he established the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China, overcoming many obstacles, with his firm belief and genuine enthusiasm. It is the first Sino-foreign university in Chinese history. He is devoting all of his life to building first-class universities in China.
