On the afternoon of December 20, 2020, the award ceremony of the first “Future Elite Cup” National Law Student Writing Competition and the launching ceremony of the second competition took place at the China Science and Technology Hall in Beijing. The senior student of the Law Faculty, Zhang Jiawei, won the Third Prize in the law essay category.

The “National Law Student Writing Competition” is sponsored by the Organizing Committee of the National Law Student Writing Competition and initiated and hosted by Hunan University School of Law. The first competition was held in August 2019. Participants included undergraduate students from law schools nationwide (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan). All submitted writing pieces were categorized into law essays, case reviews and books on characters. The preliminary round of each category received 1,253, 433 and 189 submissions respectively, and more than 2,000 students registered for the competition. Lasting more than a year, the Competition went through the preliminary round and the final round. It attracted broad attention among the public and was listed as one of the “Top Ten Events of Legal Education in 2019”.

After anonymous evaluation and systematic examination by experts, more than 100 outstanding pieces of work emerged. More than 100 students from over 50 universities, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Wuhan University, China University of Political Science and Law, East China University of Political Science and Law, Southwest University of Political Science and Law, University of International Business and Economics, and Zhejiang University, participated in the final round. Eventually, 24 award-winning papers were selected from 1253 works in the law essays category. The paper submitted by Zhang Jiawei, titled “From Safe Haven to Copyright Review – Responses of Copyright Law to the Evolution of Technology” won the Third Prize.

Jiawei Zhang is an outstanding graduate of the Class of 2020 at the Law Faculty. Before graduating from the MUST, he received master program admission offers from the Berkeley School of Law, University of California, Northwestern University School of Law, and the London School of Economics and Political Science. Zhang Jiawei is particularly interested in copyright law and has received several awards for his writings during the undergraduate period. The current award-winning paper was completed under the guidance of Assistant Professor Xie Gengliang of the Law Faculty, who also provided the referee opinion. Other members of the Law Faculty, including Associate Professor Yi Zaisheng, Associate Professor Wang Chuanhui, and Assistant Professor Bi Jingwei, also provided helpful advice to Zhang.
