From April 15th to April 16th, the representative team from Macau University of Science and Technology's Faculty of Law participated in the main round of the 2023 "International Criminal Court Chinese Moot Court" (ICC Chinese Competition) held online. They demonstrated exceptional performance and were honored with five prestigious national awards, including the National Second Prize, Best Prosecution Memorial First Place, and Second Best Prosecution Lawyer. The team consisted of five law students from the Faculty of Law: Sun Rui (team captain), Zhao Chenrui, Liaohui Ruolan, Liu Jiaying, and Si Chenyu, a master's student in law. Assistant Professor Xue Wenchao provided coaching guidance, and Assistant Professor Wang Jia offered valuable insights during the preparation process.
The ICC Chinese Competition, organized by the China International Criminal Law Youth Scholar Alliance (CIICJ), is a simulated courtroom competition conducted in Chinese, one of the six official languages of the International Criminal Court. It aims to simulate the actual legal procedures and trial practices of the International Criminal Court, promoting the establishment of international legal communities and advancing the principles of international criminal law.
The 2023 "International Criminal Court Chinese Moot Court Competition" spanned several months. Following the intense evaluation of written submissions in March, the representative team from Macau University of Science and Technology's Faculty of Law stood out among 85 participating teams nationwide. They advanced to the main round alongside 45 other exceptional teams from major universities across the country.
During the main round of oral arguments held on April 15th and April 16th, the Faculty of Law's representative team engaged in rigorous debates over two rounds. With their outstanding professionalism, exceptional advocacy skills, and composed demeanor, they achieved an impressive overall ranking of 16th place. Moreover, they received national recognition with the National Second Prize, Best Prosecution Memorial First Place, and Second Best Prosecution Lawyer awards in the Chinese competition. Additionally, Sun Rui (team captain) received the individual award for being one of the "Top 10 Prosecution Lawyers" in the oral advocacy category, while Liaohui Ruolan received the individual award for being one of the "Top 10 Government Lawyers" in the oral advocacy category.
Faculty of Law's Representative Team Excels in the Competition
The preparation for this competition lasted for seven months. During this period, the team members of Macau University of Science and Technology's Faculty of Law overcame various challenges, refined their written submissions, organized moot court training, and continuously summarized their experiences. In this competition, three oral advocates (Sun Rui, Zhao Chenrui, Liaohui Ruolan) participated in all six rounds of oral arguments and achieved outstanding results, showcasing the remarkable outcomes of their regular learning and training. Ultimately, they brought honor to the university and the faculty. The excellent performance of the Faculty of Law's representative team fully reflects the teaching standards and comprehensive strength of our university's Faculty of Law.
In the future, the Faculty of Law will continue to adhere to practice-oriented teaching activities, actively participate in professional international competitions, expand students' international perspectives, and enhance their research and learning capabilities.
