Faculty of Law Holds Seminar on "Literature Mining and Thesis Writing" for Graduate Students

On the afternoon of October 12, 2023, the Faculty of Law organized a seminar on "Literature Mining and Thesis Writing" for graduate students in Room N214. The seminar was presented by Assistant Professor Xiao Huina as the main speaker, with Assistant Professor Wong Weng Kuok serving as the discussant.

During the seminar, Assistant Professor Xiao Huina introduced students to methods and techniques for conducting academic research. Using a questioning approach, she guided students to think critically and further explored topics such as literature indexing, reading, organizing, and smoothly progressing with thesis writing. Professor Xiao emphasized the importance of a problem-driven research approach and encouraged students to propose innovative and in-depth questions in their research. Additionally, she mentioned two modes of thinking: internal legal thinking and external legal thinking. Internal legal thinking emphasizes conducting research and analysis based on legal expertise and principles, establishing a solid legal foundation. On the other hand, external legal thinking focuses on the interaction between law and external factors such as society, politics, economics, and culture. This mode of thinking allows students to better understand the social context and impact of law and incorporate these factors into their research and writing to produce more comprehensive and influential articles.

During the discussion session, Assistant Professor Wong Weng Kuok highly praised the problem-driven research approach. Through this approach, students can define their research questions more clearly, leading to more profound and valuable research work. Professor Wong also encouraged students to maintain a critical mindset when reading literature and to extract valuable information from it.

The sharing and guidance provided in this seminar opened up new perspectives on thinking and writing for students. It offered practical techniques and strategies related to academic research and thesis writing, which will contribute to achieving better results in students' future academic research and thesis writing endeavors.
