Meeting at MUST to learn and study President Xi’s spirits on important instructions towards Macau tertiary education
Macau University of Science and Technology held a meeting to “Learn and Study the Spirit of President Xi Jinping’s Important Instructions towards Tertiary Education in Macau” at N101, Library Building on the morning of June 16th 2018. Over 100 teachers and students attended the meeting at which President Liu Liang delivered President Xi’s important instructions towards tertiary education in Macau. Representatives of MUST leadership and management, administrative staff, faculty and students shared their thoughts and feelings at the meeting.
Over 100 MUST teachers and students attended the learning meeting
President Liu Liang shared that on the previous day he attended the “Meeting to Learn the Spirit of President Xi Jinping’s Important Instructions towards Tertiary Education in Macau” co-organized by the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR and the Macao SAR Government, from which he got the important instructions from President Xi, and listened to the speeches by Mr. Chui Sai On, the Chief Executive of Macao SAR, and Director Zheng Xiaosong, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao SAR. In order to fully extend President Xi’s care, concerns and expectations towards the tertiary education in Macau, MUST held a learning meeting immediately for students and teachers.
President Liu Liang of MUST and Rector Song Yonghua of the University of Macau submitted a joint letter to President Xi Jinping on behalf of students and teachers of Macau tertiary education. The letter recalled President Xi Jinping’s care and concern towards the innovative and creative science projects, and expressed our burning desire and initial planning to propel the development of innovative science and technology in Macau and to be actively involved in the scientific research construction of the motherland. President Xi squeezed time out of his extremely busy schedule to read the letter and replied with important instructions on June 15th. President Xi noted that he was glad to see the higher education institutions in Macau have made new progresses in innovative science and technology, and they are expected to go still further and achieve more by cultivating more excellent talents that love both the motherland and Macau, producing more scientific results, assisting the moderate diversification and sustainable development of Macau economy, and contributing to the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. President Xi also sent his regards to all teachers and students in Macau.
President Liu said at the meeting that President Xi’s instructions were not only a tremendous encouragement to all MUST members but also a proof of his sincere care and high expectation towards the future of tertiary education and innovative science and technology in Macau. President Xi’s important instructions showed us direction for further improvement. MUST would be devoted and follow unswervingly President Xi’s instructing spirit, adhering to the goal of educating creative and skilled talents who love both the motherland and Macau. The University strives to innovation-driven development, and to emphasis parallel development of teaching and research, continuously support Macao SAR Government’s strategy of “Developing Macau through Education, Building Macau with Talents”. MUST will work harder to nurture more skilled talents with patriotism for Macau and the country as a whole, more constructors for Macau and more people become successors of the “One Country Two Systems”. MUST will further strengthen research in innovative science and technology, produce first-class scientific results, and integrate the University’s development with the development of the Greater Bay Area and the country as a whole. We will try to do all we can and give all we have.
Chen Jimin, Member of the University Council, said she felt excited and encouraged because Macau tertiary education and MUST have been recognized. MUST will integrate into the national development; actively assist the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area construction projects.
Vice President Tong Ka Lok said that it has been MUST’s mission for the past 18 years to cultivate talents that both love the motherland and Macau. MUST will follow President Xi’s instructions to stick to this mission and work harder to give full play of our strength and skills and nurture talents demanded by the national development.
Vice President Lin Zhijun said President Xi’s instructions have great significance. National education based on the current situation should be popularized and MUST has decided to add one more course in the General-Education curriculum, regarding constitution and the Basic Law. This is to further implement our educational mission, to make contributions to Macau and the motherland, and to meet President Xi’s expectation towards us.
Dean of Faculty of Humanities and Arts Zhang Zhiqing said that it has been MUST’s development philosophy to be based in Macau, backed by the motherland, and facing the world. Macau will continue its moderate economic diversification of which the arts and creative industry has been an important part. We need to continue to cultivate excellent talents so that we will not let President Xi and Macau down.
Assistant Director Leung Lai Han, State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines, also said it is a great encouragement and shared her excitement. She said it meant huge responsibilities for the researchers because science and technology can make a country prosperous and strong, and she and other researchers would work harder, strive for more innovation and progresses, and make contributions to Macau and the whole country.
Ms. Wong Ka Weng, Head of Student Affairs Office noted President Xi’s instructions are a sign of care, as well as an inspiration for better work. She promised cultivating excellent talents who love both the country and Macau would be the top mission, and she would work together with all faculties, together with student societies, student associations and graduate student union to spread the campus culture of patriotism.
Assistant Professor Zheng Yingfeng, University International College, was very proud of the motherland and confident that the future would be better. He said he would encourage students to learn more about traditional Chinese culture in his teaching so students would be more confident culturally and realize the past and present are somehow connected and will be connected in the future. As a teacher, he would try his best to cultivate students and together to make contributions to Macau and the country.
President of the Graduate Students Union Gao Ya thanked for the instructions from President Xi and promised as a Students Union member to act as a bridge between teachers and students and to contribute to the cultivation of scientific research talents. Strong youth build a strong nation, and young people today should be able to make contributions to the development of Macau and our motherland.
Some students also shared their feelings. Xu Tianxin from Faculty of Humanities and Arts said that participation in this meeting meant a lot to her. By directly receiving the instructions from President Xi, she felt closer to the President and she would study harder and contribute in her own way. Du Xiaojun from School of Business also expressed her determination to work hard, develop her strengths and make contributions to Macau. Lam Pak In from Faculty of Humanities and Arts shared that he was very excited about President Xi’s instructions and happy about the opportunity to study at such a good University.
President Liu noted that since the semester was over and summer vacation has already begun, learning meetings like this would be held again at the beginning of the new semester so that the spirit of President Xi’s instructions could inspire more students and teachers.
