Director Yin Hong of Academy of Film of M.U.S.T. at the 1st Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Media Summit

The 1st Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Media Summit was held successfully at Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center on May 19, 2019. In the spirit of the theme of the Summit, which is Greater Bay Area Development and Humanistic Spirits, Director Yin Hong of the Academy of Film, M.U.S.T. served as a keynote speaker, addressing the topic From Leading a New Period to Leading the New Era: Thoughts on Cultural Development in the Greater Bay Area.

Prof. Yin pointed that economic development would be the hard power of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and cultural development would drive it sustainably. The dean remarked that the establishment of the new China marked the resumption of independence for China, the ensuing Reform and Opening witnessed the growing affluence of China, and the full-scale development of the new era has presented great opportunities for the Chinese people to live better and prosperous lives. Indeed, this has been a necessary requirement for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. While the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao region has been assuming a leading role in the first two phases, it should continue to lead the cultural development in the new era.

Director Yin Hong deemed cultural development as soft power driving sustainable development in the Greater Bay Area

When approaching the ways in which the Greater Bay Area could lead cultural development, Director Yin raised four suggestions. 1st, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao region is home to a great many number of individuals, events and stories of great historic values to the Chinese nation in the modern history of China, which provides a tremendously valuable reservoir worth mining. 2nd, the three places should foster cultural corporations that are competitive internationally, and cultivate a favorable environment for such corporations to grow larger and stronger, forming a complete industrial chain. 3rd, there should be endeavors made to enable the cultural industry to integrate with other cultural industries and socioeconomic development in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, so as to turn culture into a pan-cultural industry that not only has direct economic values but also creates richer social impacts, as well as indirect economic effects. The film industry has wide connections with other industries such as tourism conventions and exhibitions, games and animations, advertising brands, urban imaging, architecture, design and fashion; in this regard, the three places could develop culture and economy in a complementary way, which will enable a prospective field for greater development. 4th, efforts should be made to nurture cultural talents; this should mean more than degree education, including professional training, more importantly, new models for training talents, featuring industry-education-research integration and combination of universities with social resources; therefore, a unique path for training cultural talents could be formulated specially for Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, where another center, in addition to Beijing and Shanghai, could take root for cultural creative and film professionals to be trained and gathered.
