M.U.S.T. Chancellor Liu Chak Wan Receives Honorary Doctoral Degree from Hong Kong Baptist University

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) held Honorary Doctoral Degree Conferment Ceremony on September 11 to confer honorary doctoral degrees to six outstanding individuals commending their outstanding professional achievements and extraordinary contributions to the society. Dr. Liu Chak Wan, Chancellor of Macau University of Science and Technology received Doctor in Business Administration honoris causa from HKBU.

Prof. Edward Snape, Dean of the School of Business, HKBU, read citations for Dr. Liu Cha Wen, citing Dr. Liu as an entrepreneur rwith a caring and ethical heart and a keen supporter of education, and a community leader with significant responsibilities, Dr Liu is thoroughly deserving of the award of Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa.

Joining Dr. Liu Chak Wan as recipients of Doctor of Business Administration honoris causa from Hong Kong Baptist University this year are Dr Cheng Yan-kee, a distinguished consulting civil and structural engineer, and Dr Stanley Yim Yuk-lun, a visionary entrepreneur and a passionate philanthropist. Professor Jeremy K Nicholson, a pioneer in biomedicine, and Professor Sir Fraser Stoddart, a 2016 Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry and trailblazer in molecular mechanostereochemistry, received the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa. Furthermore, Professor Zhong Binglin, a renowned educator, was awarded the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa.

HKBU President Prof. Roland Chin said at the conferment ceremony that “From science and business to education and engineering, all culminating in service to humanity, the six honorary doctoral degree recipients have dramatically changed the way we live. Their vision and capability to make a meaningful impact on society and our lives is especially inspiring at this difficult time as we struggle with newly emerging global challenges and search for opportunities for creativity and growth.”

The conferment ceremony was held in an online manner

Due to COVID-19, the HKBU Honorary Doctoral Degree Conferment Ceremony was held in an online-and-offline hybrid manner. Dr. Liu Chak Wan attended the ceremony in an online fashion at the conference room of Macau University of Science and Technology. Vice President Tong Ka Lok, Vice President Jiang Zhihong, Vice President Kwong Ying Wa, Vice President So Yuk-chow, University Council Member Chen Jimin and several other university management members attended the ceremony to witness the joyful moment and expressed congratulations to Dr. Liu. HKBU alumnus Mr. Wong Chong-fat also attended the ceremony on site at M.U.S.T. to witness the conferment.

Dr. Liu Chak Wan is one of the founders of Macau University of Science and Technology, and he currently serves as Chancellor of the University. Chancellor Liu has been committed to development of education, culture, and societal philanthropic causes, and has been giving back to the society proactively and contributed major forces to societal development. Dr. Liu Chak Wan is currently a Standing Member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He was awarded Decoration of Honour – Golden Lotus by the Macao S.A.R. Government in 2019.
