Chair Prof. Anthony G.O. Yeh’s Talk at M.U.S.T. – Smart Technology and Smart City

Chair Prof. Anthony G.O. Yeh

A talk by Prof. Anthony G.O. Yeh entitled “Smart Technology and Smart City” was successfully held on December 7th, 2022 at N101 Auditorium of the Library Building, as part of Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.)’s talk sessions with prominent scientific figures. Sponsored by the Macao’s Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, the talk invited Prof. Anthony G.O. Yeh, who is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and prominent Geographic Information Sciences and Urban Planning Geographer. President Joseph Hun-wei LEE welcomed and thanked Prof. Anthony G.O. Yeh on behalf of M.U.S.T. with an opening greeting.

Prof. Anthony G.O. Yeh began by discussing the definition of smart city and the establishment of smart city in China in 2013. Prof. Yeh presented the development process of smart city by referring to the graph which shows the growth of utilization in ICT technology. He then further discussed the definition of smart technology from three perspectives: data collection, information processing and service provision. Prof. Yeh demonstrated the application of smart technology in our daily lives through the examples of sensors in intelligent mobility, smart lampposts, self-driving cars and robots. He also analysed multiple cases such as 5G positioning technology, smart health, smart living, smart environment, smart phone data, smart parking and smart waste classification to conclude that smart technology is indispensable in our lives.

Prof. Yeh introduced 3D spatial data from three perspectives, namely building model, infrastructure model and terrain model. Simultaneously, he explained the application of 3D spatial data in 3D map and discussed the integration of 3D GIS and BIM to demonstrate the power of 3D technology. Prof. Yeh also made a comparative analysis of traditional big data and new big data, and used the two to describe the transformation process from urban information to urban analysis.

At the end of the lecture, Prof. Yeh answered a student’s question about whether to choose the universality of product design or to develop the product design according to local conditions. Professor Yeh emphasised that the priority should be given to the application of product design. Our system cannot be used to do just one thing. We need to think about how to take a simple thing and make it complicated and diversified, so that we can surpass it and differentiate from other products.
