Doctor of Philosophy in Creative Writing Study Plan

I. Program Duration

The normal study period for the students enrolled in this program is 3 years. The maximum study period is 6 years.

IV. Admission Requirements

  • Master degree holders, major in Creative Writing, Language and Literature, Sino-Western Culture or related fields.
  • Must have at least one of the following proof of language proficiency with the lowest score/result: CET6 450, TEM-4 60, TEM-8 60, TOEFL iBT 78, TOEFL Essential 8.5, IELTS 6, GRE verbal 150 or equivalent language proficiency recognized by the University (Applicants with outstanding academic writing or literacy ability but low English proficiency may provide relevant proofs recognized by the University).
  • Admissions priority is given to candidates with prior experiences in teaching, research, businesses, management, or freelancing successful experience; those with strong intention on writing and submitted excellent writing publications will be given priority; Candidates have clear careen planning on creative writing and have excellent creative proposal on writing will also receive priority consideration.
  • Candidates from creative writing industries or colleges with requested commission trainingto cultivate creative writing talents with master’s degree will be considered for admissions.

V. Research Direction

Upon completion of all compulsory courses at the end of the first year, students will discuss with their dissertation supervisors on their research focus in alignment with the program objectives.

VII.Teaching Requirements

Complete 33 credits in total:

  1. Students are required to complete six core courses and two elective courses in the first academic year. Teaching methods include lecturing, discussions, reading and writing workshops; students are required to pass an examination or submit a writing piece or a research paper.Students’ grades of each course are given based on the overall assessment of their in-class discussion, grades of examination, and writings etc.
  2. After completing the aforementioned 24 credits under list (I) and (II), students can start writing the thesis proposal. Students can start writing the dissertation upon completion of thesis proposal defense. The formal writing can be carried out according to the writing process of the dissertation. The duration of dissertation composition is approximately 24 months.
  3. Complete dissertation proposal defense and the dissertation should pass the assessment and be defended successfully.

VIII. Program Duration

  1. In general, the duration of taking taught courses is 12 months. The duration of dissertation composition is 24 months,
  2. Classes will be arranged during the days or evenings of Monday to Saturday.

IX. Graduation Requirement

Upon approval from the Senate of the University, a Doctoral Degree will be conferred on a student when he or she has:

  1. completed and met the requirements prescribed in the study plan of his or her program within the specific study period, and achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above (excluding dissertation)
  2. abided by the regulations of the University
  3. cleared all fees and charges and returned all University property and equipment borrowed
