General Introduction to Chinese Culture

Course Introduction
General Introduction to Chinese Culture is a compulsory subject of the general education program of Macau University of Science and Technology. Its contents involve cultural phenomena in the fields of Chinese history, society, philosophy, religion, literature, art, science and technology and education, and their social significances.
The course aims to popularize basic knowledge in the Chinese cultural fields, help students to understand the significant achievements, major events and extraordinary individuals in relation to Chinese culture, appreciate the social values and important roles of Chinese culture, and become aware of the spiritual charms of culture. It requires students to be able to apply right world outlooks and methodologies to analyze historical and cultural phenomena, succeed and spread the valuable historical and cultural traditions, draw on the essences, improve qualities, and eventually become a desirable high-quality talent that caters to the need of the era.

General Introduction to Western Cultures

Course introduction
General Introduction to Western Cultures is an elementary general education course. It aims to enable students to grasp the basic development and spiritual essences of western cultural advancement through a series of systematic lectures. In contents, the course is comprised of three parts. The first part is mainly about Latin and Romanic cultures, the second part is about mid-century Christianity cultures, and the third part is about western contemporary cultures. The lectures not only help students to understand the different characteristics and cultural phenomena of various historical stages in western cultural advancement, but also help them to appreciate the essential spirits of western cultures and the interconnections of various historical stages.
The course adopts the basic methodologies of aligning history with logic, combines insightful graphic illustrations with enlightening lively lectures, enhances students’ ability to reflect while expanding their knowledge storage.

General Introduction to Chinese and Western Cultures

Course introduction
General Introduction to Chinese and Western Cultures is a compulsory general education course open to all programs at the University. As its name suggests, the course comprises two parts, a Chinese Culture section and a Western Cultures section. The Chinese Culture section teaches mainly historical knowledge and culture, ancient literature and culture, artistic theories and culture, and history and culture relating to Chinese science and technology. By way of a series of systematic lectures, the course aims to enable undergraduates of all majors at the University to grasp the basic historical thread of occurrence, development and evolution of traditional Chinese culture, familiarize with the major events and figures in the course of development of the traditional Chinese culture, appreciate the spirits and cultural essences of various times, and build up knowledge on the dynamic relations, respective characteristics and interconnections of the main development stages of traditional Chinese culture. This in turn provides the students with a solid knowledge base, which they may need in their future studies of various sub-sections of Chinese culture from different professional perspectives.
The Western Cultures section tackles mainly topics such as ancient Greek culture, ancient Romanic culture, mid-century Christianity culture and western contemporary cultures. By way of a series of systematic lectures, the course aims to enable undergraduates of all majors at the University to grasp the basic historical thread of occurrence, development and evolution of western cultures, familiarize with the major events and figures in the course of development of the western cultures, appreciate the spirits and cultural essences of various times, and build up knowledge on the dynamic relations, respective characteristics and interconnections of the main development stages of western cultures. Introduction of lecturers
1. Liu Zhonglin is a male professor, who obtained Master degree in Philosophy in 1981. He held positions of lecturer (1984), associate professor (1987), and professor (199) at Tianjin Normal University, and was former Director of “Cross-Disciplinary Sciences Institute” at Tianjin Normal University, and Director of the Science and Technology Philosophy Teaching and Research Department. In the meantime, he was Senior Visiting Scholar at the Department of Philosophy of Peking University (1993), where he studied under the supervision of renowned scholars in philosophy and culture such as Prof. Zhang Dainian and Prof. Tang Yijie. In 1997, he was awarded special allowances by the State Council. In 2000, when the University of Science and Technology of China established its School of Humanities and Social Science, he transferred to the University of Science and Technology of China and has been serving as Professor and Ph.D. Supervisor, and once served as Director of the Science and Philosophy Teaching and Research Department, Director for the doctoral degrees education-provider of philosophy as a 1st-class subject category, and Director for the “Chinese Culture School” Program of the University of Science and Technology of China. In 2008, he was elected to be one of the first Class-2 professors of the University of Science and Technology of China. in 1995, he came to Macao and attended the Chinese Culture “Synthesis and Innovation” academic conference for the first time. Since 2008, he has been serving as a lecturer for elective courses at the Department of General Education of Macau University of Science and Technology; in 2012, he was appointed a distinguished guest professor, and served as lecturer for compulsory and elective courses such as General Introduction to Chinese Culture, General Introduction to Philosophy, Chinese Culture: Succession and Innovation, and Cross-disciplinary Sciences and Cross-disciplinary Talents.
2. Li Kai is a male professor who is mainly affiliated with the School of Liberal Arts, Nanjing University. He is Ph.D. supervisor and contact supervisor for post-docs. He was Guest Professor of Chinese at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Director of the Overseas Students Department of Nanjing University, Vice Dean of the Institute for International Students, Nanjing University, and Member of the National Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language Academic Advisory Committee. He’s completed a number of projects commissioned by the National Social Sciences Foundation, Ministry of Education, and the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), won third prize of the Jiangsu Province Philosophy and Social Sciences Outstanding Achievements three times, won 2nd prize of Nanjing University Humanities Outstanding Achievements three times, and won Nanjing University Graduate Supervisors Teaching and Talents Cultivation Award. He currently serves as Director of the Academic Committee of Jiangsu Province Linguistics Society, and is person-in-charge and contributor for the Nanjing compilation group of the revised version of Ci Yuan by Commercial Press.
3. Zhao Lin is a male professor, who is affiliated with Wuhan University as Professor and Ph.D. Supervisor at the School of Philosophy, and concurrently Director of the Institute of European and American Religion and Culture, Wuhan University. He is also council member of the Chinese Association of Foreign Philosophies History, council member of the Chinese Religion Studies Society, Visiting Professor of the Chung Chi College, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and part-time professor at Southeast University and Macau University of Science and Technology. He’s published 14 monographs of academic works and lecture compilations in Mainland China and Taiwan (China), 2 course works, including General Introduction to Western Cultures, and over 140 papers in renowned journals at home and abroad. In 2007, he was elected a National Renowned Teaching Scholar. Two of this lecture series, History of Western Philosophies and General Introduction to Western Cultures, were elected as national classic courses, respectively in 2006 and 2008. In recent years, he’s been invited frequently to appear as a guest scholar in the renowned TV show “Baijia Jiangtan (The Hundred Schools of Thought Forum” on CCTV and give academic talks in about one hundred universities in Mainland China and the Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan region. In 2002, he was elected as The Most Popular Lecturer among Students by the Huazhong University of Science and Technology National University Students Cultural Quality Education Base.
4. Gu Weimin is a male professor, who is mainly affiliated with Shanghai Normal University as Director for the Religions and Chinese Traditional Thoughts Teaching and Research Department of the Institute of Chinese Traditional Thoughts, Professor at the Department of Philosophy, and Ph.D. Supervisor. He is also part-time professor at Macau University of Science and Technology, council member of Chinese Religion Society, research fellow at the Institute of Modern Chinese Thought and Culture, East China Normal University, member of Italian Historical Sciences Committee, Milan International Relations Society, and Indian Christianity History Society. He’s published 10 monographs, including Christianity and Modern Chinese Society.
5. Xu Ping is a female professor, who is affiliated with Peking University as a Professor and Vice Dean of the Institute of World History Research, Peking University. She’s won a number of prizes, including East China Normal University Outstanding Dissertation Award, Antai Scholarship, Yang Renbian Scientific Research Award, and 1st prize of Peking University Humanities and Social Sciences Award. She is concurrently standing council member of the Chinese Society for World Modern History Studies, the Chinese Society for French History Studies, and the Chinese Society for World Earlier Modern History Studies. She’s published a number of papers in journals at home and abroad, for example, History in Cartography: Macao in the 16th-19th Centuries Great Meeting of the East and West, and “Encounter of Two Worlds at Their Primes: Review of the 18th Century China-France Cultural Exchanges, and has published more than 10 monographs, including Macao Stories – Observations of China by Three French Men in the 18th-19th Century.

Introduction to the Constitution and the Basic Law

Course Introduction
The course is a compulsory general education course open to non-law-major undergraduates. It lectures on the basic theories of the Constitution, and the corresponding sections in the Constitution regarding the state structure, governmental departmental system, basic rights and obligations of the citizens, election system, and party system. It also lectures on the formulation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle and the Macao S.A.R. Basic Law, and the corresponding sections in the Basic Law regarding the relation of the Central People’s Government and the Macao S.A.R. Government, the basic rights of Macao citizens, and the political system of Macao.
(Note: Students of the Bachelor of Food and Beverage Management are exempted from the course of Introduction to the Constitution and the Basic Law)
