Law Students and Faculty Members Participated in the Online Version of “2020 CUPL - Beijing Winter Camp for Hong Kong and Macao Law Students”

In order to enrich students’ holiday activities, broaden their horizons, improve Macao students’ understanding of Mainland law, and enhance exchanges between Macao students and Mainland teachers and students, the “2020 CUPL – Beijing Winter Camp for Hong Kong and Macao Law Students” took place from December 27, 2020 to January 1, 2021. Due to the impact of the ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease, the winter camp was held online. Assistant Professor Dai Mengliang and five students from the Law Faculty of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), namely Xu Daolin, Ou Siyuan, Zhang Yucheng, Gu Xinzhu and Xie Zixuan, attended the event. The event lasted for 6 days and was attended by nearly 100 students and teachers from the China University of Political Science and Law (the CUPL) and universities in Hong Kong and Macao. All participants exchanged their learning experiences in law.

Five teachers from the CUPL delivered keynote speeches addressing both the theoretical and the practical aspects of the teaching and learning in law. Theoretically speaking, Xu Shenjian’s presentation on “clinical legal education” introduced the front edge teaching model and highlighted the importance of maintaining the integration between theory and practice in legal education. Mr. Wang Jinxi introduced the framework and structure of the judicial system in Mainland China and provided directions for local students from Hong Kong and Macao to seek employment in the Mainland; Mr. Yu Fei presented the seven highlights of China’s first Civil Code; Mr. Wang Haiyan introduced China’s criminal procedure law and emphasized on the pivotal role of the rules on the evidence in criminal proceedings; Mr. Huo Zhengxin’s speech gave the students in the event a better understanding of the legal aspects of overseas cultural relics recovery.

Most importantly, the audience was well informed with the policy concerns surrounding the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (also known as the Hong Kong National Security Law) and its significance in safeguarding the unity of the country and consolidating the Hong Kong Basic Law. On the practical level, the students learned about the advanced Internet courts system in the Mainland and deeply appreciated the Central Government’s determination and vigor on judicial reform. The five students from the MUST reported that they have benefited from the event greatly.

After the classes, through exchanges with the outstanding student representatives of the CUPL, the five MUST student representatives felt their hardworking attitude and exciting after-school life and reminded themselves about the importance of stepping out of the comfort zone and exploring richer university experience.

The five MUST student representatives expressed that they would continue practicing the motto of MUST to “be analytical and sincere”, and continue working hard to become patriotic legal professionals who can “cultivate the moral self, regulate the family, maintain the state rightly and make the world peaceful”.

On the first day of the New Year, January 1, 2021, the online winter camp ended with a speech from the Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the CUPL.
