14th “Wang Yang Cup” Moot Court Competition and 14th “Guan Ying Cup” Legal Essay Contest Concludes with the Award Ceremony

On the evening of May 2, 2023, the final round of the 14th 'Wang Yang Cup' Moot Court Competition and the award ceremony for the 14th 'Guan Ying Cup' Legal Essay Contest, organized by the Faculty of Law of Macau University of Science and Technology, co-organized by the Student Union of the Faculty of Law of Macau University of Science and Technology, and supported by the Macau University of Science and Technology Foundation, took place at Lecture Hall N211 in the Library Building N on the university campus.

The “Wang Yang Cup” Moot Court Competition is a regular student activity of the Faculty of Law aimed at cultivating students' oral legal debate skills and teamwork spirit. This edition of the competition started in March 2023 and lasted for nearly two months. After three rounds of qualification, preliminary, and semi-final matches, a total of four teams advanced to the final.

The final round consisted of a match for third place and the championship match. The panel of judges included Prosecutor Pak Wa Ngai from the Macau Special Administrative Region Public Prosecutions Office, Lei Wun Kong, a member of the Basic Law Committee of the Macau Special Administrative Region of the National People's Congress Standing Committee and a lawyer, Professor Ma Yunqin, Visiting Senior Instructor at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Macau, Professor Liu Chen Gkun, Director of The Institute for Sustainable Development at the Macau University of Science and Technology, and Associate Professor Yi ZaiCheng from the Faculty of Law.

The first match for third place featured the affirmative team consisting of Zhang Chenyang, Zhou Yijie, Zheng Zixuan, and Wang Zhanran against the opposing team composed of Huang Yuhang, Shen Yuxin, Yan Jiaqi, and Tian Yiran. They engaged in a heated debate on the topic of "The Need/Non-Need for Administrative Approval in the Use of Assisted Reproductive Technologies." In the second championship match, the affirmative team of Zhu Juanyu, Sun Shichao, Gao Kai, and Yan Wenkai faced off against the opposing team of Lin Yizhen, Li Zongsheng, Zhao Ziyu, and Mo Fei on the topic of "Whether AI-generated creations are considered artworks." Both debates showcased brilliant confrontations. The judges highly praised the participants' performance, commending their excellent teamwork, formidable debating skills, and profound legal knowledge. Moreover, the students demonstrated exceptional debate etiquette and showcased the remarkable qualities of the Faculty of Law.

After two intense matches, the team of Lin Yizhen, Li Zongsheng, Zhao Ziyu, and Mo Fei emerged as the champions of this year's debate competition, impressing the judges with their outstanding performance. The team of Zhu Juanyu, Sun Shichao, Gao Kai, and Yan Wenkai secured the second-place position, while the team of Huang Yuhang, Shen Yuxin, Yan Jiaqi, and Tian Yiran claimed the third-place position. Wang Zhanran was honored with the title of "Best Debater of the Entire Competition."

The award ceremony for the 14th "Guan Ying Cup" Legal Essay Contest was also held on the same evening. The "Guan Ying Cup" essay contest is a regular student activity of the Faculty of Law aimed at cultivating students' research and writing skills in legal papers.

The "Guan Ying Cup" essay contest for this edition began accepting submissions in January 2023 and received a total of 27 papers from undergraduate and graduate students. The college formed a judging panel, conducted two rounds of evaluations, and subjected the papers to the university's academic integrity detection system. Ultimately, six students were awarded prizes.

Zhang Yiying, a fourth-year undergraduate student, won the Best Paper Award in the undergraduate category for her paper titled "The Conflict between Victim Participation in International Criminal Court Proceedings and the Accused's Right to a Fair Trial."

Sun Chenhaojie, a third-year undergraduate student, and Gong Quan, also a third-year undergraduate student, received the Outstanding Paper Award in the undergraduate category for their papers titled "Data Crawling Behavior in the Context of the 'Anti-Unfair Competition Law'—Balancing the Values of 'Efficiency' and 'Order'" and "The Formation of Consensus on Rights during Social Transformation: Rethinking Dworkin's 'Taking Rights Seriously'" respectively.

He Kunhao, a first-year Master of Law student, received the Best Paper Award in the graduate category for his paper titled "Exploring the Origin of Property Acts from the Perspective of Independent Causality: Based on Article 311 of the Civil Code."

Xu Fang, a first-year Doctor of Law student, and Wang Jingyi, a second-year Master of Law student, were awarded the Outstanding Paper Award in the graduate category for their papers titled "Contradictions and Dilemmas in Functional Interpretation of Criminal Law: A Reexamination Based on the Perspective of Risk Society" and "Legal Mobilization of Social Egg Freezing in Singapore" respectively.
