Innovations in Medical Education and Research Symposium successfully held by Faculty of Medicine

In celebration of the 22nd anniversary of the Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.), the Faculty of Medicine hosted the “Innovations in Medical Education and Research Symposium” in N317 on April 2, 2022. In addition to wishing the University a very happy birthday and congratulating it on the successful 22 years, this symposium also celebrates the first cohort of medical students in Macao entering the clinical phase of their training.

Chair Professor Joseph Lee, President and Vice Chancellor of Macau University of Science and Technology, Chair Professor Paul Tam, Vice President and Chair Professor Jiang Zhihong, Vice President and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, were joined by esteemed ministerial guests from the Publicity and Culture Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region, the Portuguese Consul-General in Macau and Hong Kong, the Timor-Leste Delegation and the Delegate Representative of Portugal to the Permanent Secretariat. Other guests included senior committee members from the General Assembly of Portuguese Speaking Physicians Association.

Chair Professor Joseph Lee gave a welcome speech highlighting the honorable endeavor of training “Tomorrow’s Doctors” at the Faculty of Medicine, and positive developments including the appointment of the Zhuhai Municipal People’s Hospital as the First Affiliated Hospital for the M.U.S.T. Faculty of Medicine. Chair Professor Lee officiated the opening of the symposium, which was followed by the keynote lecture delivered by Professor Yang Zhenglin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital. Professor Yang provided an overview of his cutting-edge research on retinal diseases. Educational and research experts from the Greater Bay Area, Greater China, and also overseas shared their expertise and experience. Professor Zhang Shuyang (President of Peking Union Medical College Hospital), Professor Kuang Ming (Vice President of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University), Professor Luo Liangping (Director of the Medical Department of Jinan University) Dr. Michael Parker (Associate Dean for Online Learning of Harvard Medical School), Professor Lo Chung Mau (Hospital Chief Executive, The University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital) and Associate Professor Chen Xiaowei (Peking University) delivered excellent and inspiring presentations.

The symposium also marked the official launch of the journal Medcomm – Future Medicine. Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Chair Prof. Zhang Kang, and co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal, announced the launch. Medcomm – Future Medicine focuses on the discovery of novel disease mechanisms and the application of cutting-edge technologies. It will publish high-quality, impactful research in medicine and biology, using multidisciplinary approaches, to transform patient care.

The symposium was also a chance for the Faculty of Medicine to showcase its own educational innovations such as its approach to improving communication skills in medical students, its electives program, and other novel methods of teaching. Dean Prof. Manson Fok described his team’s cutting-edge research on innovative methods to combat Covid-19. Prof. Brian Tomlinson shared his expertise and experience on high cholesterol diseases.

The symposium was conducted in a lively but warm atmosphere. The Dean expressed his gratitude to the distinguished guests and speakers, staff, students, and parents for their participation in the forum.
