- Recognizing the fact that the most important resource that underpins the success of smart city efforts is well educated people, the Institute has established a new Master of Science degree program in Applied Mathematics and Data Science. The program will admit its inaugural batch of students in fall 2018. This will help lay a solid foundation for the sustained efforts in turning Macau into a world-class smart city in the days to come.
- Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) is an internationally renowned institute for smart city research and applications. Working with ASTRI, a summer internship is established for undergraduate students. After some rigorous screening, five IT students were selected and will participate in the inaugural ASTRI summer internship program this summer.
- Several Ph.D. students were recruited in the areas of smart city research. In particular, three senior company executive and managers from YGsoft will be part of the class of 2017.
The Institute has organized/co-organized a number of smart city seminars and symposium in the past seven months.

- A Framework for Enabling User Preference Profiling through Wi-Fi Logs (November 15 , 2016), Prof. Arbee Chen, Asia University, Taiwan.
- Visualizing Big Hierarchical Data (December 2nd, 2016), Prof. Kang Zhang, University of Texas, Dallas, USA.
- Interesting Big Data (December 9th, 2016), Prof. Hongxin Zhang, Zhejiang University.
- Learning from Uncertainty for Big Data (December 9th, 2016), Prof. Xizhao Wang, Shenzhen University.
- From Smart City to Smart Traffic (March 20th, 2017): speakers were from HK ASTRI.
- Computer Vision Applications in Smart City (March 23th, 2017): speakers were from Institute of Automation, CAS, Peking University Big Data Research Institute, and M-Cloud.
- From Smart City, Smart Campus, to Smart Library (March 24th, 2017): speakers were MUST IT students working on smart campus projects.
- Smart Tourism for Smart Cities Symposium (May 4th, 2017), an event organized by Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management and assisted by the Institute.
