Compulsory Courses
DHPZ10 Conceptualisation of Public Health Research (3 credits)
The course is designed to assist students in beginning a systematic preparation for identifying public health problems that are considered important for scholarly communications, clarifying research ideas and concepts, evaluating critically research reports, formulating research questions by focusing on specific aspects of a broader research topic, and defining precisely the aim and objectives of a study. Since students with different backgrounds will come into the course with a variety of interests and skills and would probably plan to embark on a wide range of areas, the course is designed to identify and build their capacities relevant to conducting public health research, provide focused specialist input, and offer a collective forum for debating research approaches.
DHPZ11 Advanced Research Methods in Public Health I – Advanced Biostatistics (5 credits)
This course covers some of the advanced biostatistical methods commonly used in public health. Students will be taught to apply the appropriate statistical analytical methods to address specific research questions with a given data set, conduct the selected statistical analysis, and present and interpret the results appropriately. They will also be exposed to statistical software commonly used in analysing health data.
DHPZ12 Advanced Research Methods in Public Health II – Advanced Applied Epidemiology (5 credits)
Based upon the foundation of the Epidemiology course offered in the MPH program, this course further enhances students’ knowledge and concepts of modern epidemiology. The course will cover advanced skills and techniques commonly used in epidemiological practices and research. These include systematic review and meta-analysis, clinical diagnostic tests, questionnaire design and instrumentation, and advanced research design.
DHPZ13 Academic writing for Journal and Thesis (5 credits)
This course intends to help student researchers structure and write their theses and research articles better. The focus will be on structuring and writing proposals, papers, or bigger projects, such as a thesis (but less with research methodology or strategies for managing the project), argumentation, logical reasoning, structure, and the like. Upon completion of the course, candidates should have drafted a research proposal and developed a full research proposal as well as a research ethics application.
